When atheists create their own meaning of life, is there ever anything original?

Whenever someone suggests that atheism leads to nihilism one hears the response that atheists create their own meaning. I Googled that and found lots of statements like this one: "But just because our lives have no grand, universal meaning doesn’t mean they don’t have any meaning at all. You do not matter to the universe but you certainly matter to the people around you....you can make your own life and the lives of others better, reduce their pain and make their lives more happy and more fulfilling." Doesn't this sound a little, er, um, derivative?

In what way is wanting to make other people's lives better derivative?

Humans have been around for millenia. I'd be very surprised if there were truly any "new" ideas out there. That having been said, I'm sure if you pressed people for details (both atheist and theist) you'd find that everyone has their own personal meaning of life. Not all Christians feel called to do the same thing in their lives, nor all Jews, Hindus, Muslims, whatever. Everyone is an individual and will put their own individual spin on their life.

Life has no meaning, but it does have something a little different: purpose. That purpose is different for every thinking being. I believe the rightful purpose of every human being is to work and reach out for that which makes him happy, through recognition and practice of the principles and values that promote prosperity for individual and overall human life.

Besides, why are you criticizing the philosophical outlook of atheists when most theists don't even form their own philosophies through reason and logic, and instead blindly accept false substitutes for morality from ancient cultures?

I think everyones meanong of life is completely different, even if only in a small way. I agree with that guy but I also believe in constantly researching my beliefs, an others beliefs, my spiritual life lies in philosophy, and at the way I view the world. There might be others who agree with me, there might be others who only slightly agree with me, or someone who just disagrees totally. No ones "Meaning of life" is exactly the same because everyones lives are different, everyone goes through different things so the way they view the world will always be different.

Why do you think every atheist needs to find a different meaning for the statement to be true? If you say to a bunch of high school graduates, "Find your dream and follow it," and many of them open their own small businesses, would you call them unoriginal and derivative, implying that they had no reason to believe they were following a dream if they picked a path similar to the one others chose?

So a deity friend that created us and make our destiny is original? So those Assyrian, Egyptian, Greeks or Aztec are right.... i will let those silenced temples and oracles speak the truth about imaginary friends and the unbelivers.... Don't worry we understand why some people need invisible friends to get some meaning in their life...

No, most people, theist or atheist, have common meaning and purpose to their lives - family, children, careers, friends, politics, interests etc. This is because we are social mammals with complex brains who share a culture with many others. Whilst we have a variety of interests, having a completely original one is the domain of geniuses and obsessives.

Who says there has to be a meaning to life? My only meaning is to get a high paying job and end up successful and happy. That's meaning enough for me.

So what's the question? Am I supposed to guess what you think it's derived from?

I'm borrowing a line from one of my favorite songs to explain how I see it.

"Sometimes we only live for the here and now".
