America is a country where religion is far more entrenched than in other western nations yet you have to wonder why that religiosity didn't deter institutionalised racial discrimination. It wasn't happening in secular Europe only in the religious US and in fact racist attitudes were more prevalent in the bible belt than anywhere else in the US.
