how to enable both the built in macbook pro screen and an external screen?

i just got a macbook pro 13 inch (OSX 10.7.2), and i plugged in the mini display port to gain some extra desktop space, but when i plugged it in, the display on the laptop turned off, and whenever i unplug the display cable the mac turns off, so now i can only use the external monitor (samsung syncmaster b2330), so i am wondering how i can have both of them on at the same time... that and have it so that i can unplug the cable and be able to actually use the laptop. i would really appreciate some help.

Update:

I know i can view two monitors at once because i was able to do it one time, but when the macbook went to sleep, the problem came up again

It all depends on your integrated graphics chipset.

Try going to the screen in which you can change the computers resolution and see if there is an option to display on dual monitors. If you don't see a repeat or dual option then you can only have one display running at a time.
