How am I failing at weight loss?

I'm a mid-40's woman whose doctor is bullying her into excersizing. I have a very sedentary job, but two young kids at home so when I'm home, I'm constantly on my feet. I've failed to lose the last 20 - 30 lbs I gained during pregnancy, years ago.

A gym opened up across from where I work, so since july I've been going between 2 - 4 times a week to work out (I only have an hour). So I do 1/2 hr of eliptical and then some stretches and floor excersizes. I sweat like a cat at the dog pound...if not more.

I haven't lost 1 pound. After all these months, my pants feel tight again this morning. I don't eat more than I used to but I have to admit a weakness for food/sweets. I make lovely meals for my family at night and though I don't feel hunger, eat anyway because it looks so good and because I'm joining in on family time. I've tried to cut down on the portion, but that seems to make no difference.

I keep telling myself I need to starve myself or something. I hate fruit/fruit juices. I'm not pigging out on sweets/chips/etc. every day. The only food I bring into the house has to have some nutritional element to it so I can set a good example to my (extremely skinny) kids.

What have you done to lose a lot of weight, yet not go to extremes? Or has it taken extremes?

Update:

Lisa - thanks for the great daily menu. Very do-able! If it worked for you, then you have inspired me to try it as well. Footnote...I will try it though I hate soup, fruit and yogurt. Maybe my problem is that I hate all the low-fat/calorie foods that help us maintain a healthy weight. I love cheese/chocolate/spicy heavy foods.

Update 2:

Heiko - I had no luck with your link, but thanks for the reply anyway.

Disheartening huh! Stick at the exercise routine, heres my diet plan, try it i lost 14lbs in a month,

    Breakfast, cereal any kind,

Mid lunch snack, low cal yogurt and a piece of fruit,

Lunch, tin of soup any kind but below 250cals with a slice of buttered bread,

Mid dinner snack, seafood sticks or fruit

Dinner, fish with veg and a fist size portion of potatoes, if not fish lean meat is good,

An ok snack of an evening could be strawberries dipped in melted choc - over 60% cocoa is ideal.

This amounts to around 1400 cals a day, should be enough to kickstart ur weight loss

    Good luck! Xx

  • I would suggest a few things, first don't be so hard on yourself. Its great that you are dedicating the time and effort in the gym, keep it up. I always tell clients to not get so focused on weight goals. If all you care about is your weight then as soon as you hit your goal, then most people will stop and gain all the weight back. (The Yo-Yo effect). I would try to mix up your exercise routine a bit, to the best of your ability (assuming you don't have any injuries that prevent certain exercises). I would also really start to focus on learning more on nutrition. I have a nutrition coach in my office who has an online resource that you might take a look at. (its hard to beat at 7 dollars a month) You can use other programs if it more congruent to your belief system. I've lost 35 lbs and have kept it off for 2 years now. Its really comes down to education. The more you learn about proper nutrition the easier it will be for you to make the transition from unhealthy to healthy habits. I wish you the best of luck in your journey to better Health!

Well initially nine stone isn't that large. I consider you're being method too tough on your self. Unless you're fairly, fairly brief that's lovely traditional. I consider what you'll be doing is chopping out the whole thing you favor and proscribing your self an excessive amount of while you vitamin in order that you can not preserve up with it. You will have to appear into find out how to uncover the meals which can be low calorie and extra healthful so you'll be able to honestly devour extra of them then you definitely consider while you're healthy eating plan. It is approximately consuming fitter no longer plenty much less. But then nonetheless deliver your self a deal with commonly that method you will not crave and all of a sudden binge on them. Also bear in mind pastime, no longer simply to drop extra pounds however simply to be healthful regularly. If you get into consistent pastime you'll begin feeling bigger approximately your self. Even if it does not difference your frame that a lot it'll make you consider well.

no i didnt go to extremes. all i do is count my calories, and adjust it (if i want to lose a little, i eat less. if im focusing on maintenance, i eat a little more.) and i work out a few times a week. thats just because im now trying to build some muscle though.

if you dont count calories, youre keeping yourself in the dark. all the exercise in the world wont matter if youre chowing down on bunches of food. and believe me, some things have a suprising amount of calories in them! counting them has become a habit. the sense of control and understanding what is going in to my body is reassuring.

start looking at food labels or just stay fat. honestly.

you have to figure out how many calroies your body needs to maintain weight, and then burn more calroies than you consume. the general guideline is a deficit of 500calories.
