Will my dog remember me?
I am thinking about going away for about 18 months after I do 2 years of college here. My dog will be about 3 or 4 years old when I go and he is no doubt MY dog.
He sleeps in my room at the foot of my bed and he is my best friend too.
He is very smart and can pick up on when it is bed time or time to go outside etc.
I went camping for a week once when he was about 1/2 a year old and he did seem to remember me when I got back.
If I do go away he will have to stay with my family and I won't get to see him again for 18 months.
Luckily he loves and gets along with my parents, especially my dad who is his 2nd favorite person alive.
I just wonder if he will remember me or at least warm back up to me quickly when I get back.
I know it is silly to worry about something when it probably won't happen for another 2 years or so but it worries me anyway.
- Any personal experiences would be very helpful.
Thank you :)

I can not speak from personal experience but i believe from life in general that Dogs have as i'm sure your aware of their own distinct personalities but a common survival instinct. I believe your dog could possibly remember you but just as easily forget you as a Dog lives by his instincts and habits. I was in the Hospital for a week once and my Dog refused to come near me and growled at me for a short time. But once i started calling him by his name by the days end he was back to normal around me. So i think what will happen is he will not actually remember you but once your around him again his instinctive behavior will recognize the kind of person you were and eventually become normal as before around you. He of course may have developed some other habits such as sleeping in a different room and on that you may have to retrain him. Hope i helped.

Oh God, yes! Of course your dog will remember you! He'll be delighted to see you again, too! When I left to study abroad I left my dog with my parents and ended up only seeing him 2 to 3 times a year for a few weeks. Whenever I came back, he would look at me for a moment as though he couldn't believe it was really me, then go crazy with joy.
Your dog will remember you no matter how long you're gone. Your smell will always be familiar to him!

Most likely he will remember you. I didn't see my moms boxer for four years and she seemed to remember me wheni saw her again.
