question about cataracts in the eye?

When you start getting up into your late 40's to early 50's is it fairly common to get cataracts? Both of my parents had them (and removed), and now my older brother just had one removed. He's in his late 40's, and I'm edging right up there too.

Just wondering if it's more of an old age type of thing, or if it's more hereditary?

Update:

Don't currently have a doctor to ask. Am without insurance for a few months.

The majority of cataracts are age related.

Some are connected to diabetes, or other eye diseases.

About 1% of cataracts are congenital, which are in my family.

To prolong getting cataracts, use sun glasses that will protect your eyes from the UV rays of the sun. Every one will get cataracts with age, but avoiding the UV rays of the sun will help.

Ask your doctor.i'm not sure if it is hereditary.you could ask a family member.or even speak to a pharmacists about this too.
