Car Stalling at first starting, give it gas and okay?

We have a 96 ford contour that has been having starting issues. Its winter time here in ohio. In the morning we would go out to start it and it would crank, turn over, and die. We notice there is some putting sounds heard from the engine area. Like puts of air. If we turn the key and press the gas it will stay running. Almost as if there is something blocking and gets cleared out. I'm clueless to what it could be. It doesn't stall while driving. Just when first starting up. We recently had a coolant line bust and just had that fixed. Battery, alt and starter all checked out fine. I thought maybe exhust leak issue because i think we have one.

Thanks.

Update:

its the 2.0 4cyl. contour sport

Need to know if your Contour is equipped with the 2.0L 4 cylinder engine or the 2.5L DOHC V-6 engine?

There is some stuff called heat that you can use it will help clear that up u can find it just about anywhere. and also might check ur spark plugs.... if its an exhaust leak ull here it while its running it will sound deeper and louder..... but i think it either spark plugs or just needed clean a lil bit try lucas oil fuel injector too that is kinda like a bottle of heat either will work..oo and also if you turn the key right before it starts to turn over then turn all the way back off then try and start your car might start better it will fill you car with gas.. try that before going and buying stuff

Swagger, read this CAREFULLY! Modern fuel injected engines work BACKWARDS from cars with carburetors on them.Your "GAS" pedal is really your "AIR" pedal. ALL your foot does is open and close the THROTTLE BODY door. FUel is adjusted to the amount of AIR entering your engine at the T. body. Near your throttle body is a thing called an IAC valve (idle air control)> It;s job is to add and subtract additional AIR going in your fuel mixture. ON FORD engines it is REMOVABLE for cleaning. It is held in place by 2 8mm headed screws. CLean your throttle body and the IAC valve. A dirty IAC Valve will eventually make your O2 sensors and converter begin to clog up with carbon. KEEPING the IAC valve CLEAN as showroom, hospital clean is your BEST insurance against trashing out expensive engine sensors and engine parts, even the converter and exhaust system!!! Your converter and exhaust are CAPABLE of lasting for the LIFE of your fine car. ONLY if you make sure the fuel mixture stays MIXED correctly. ANy quicky lube can clean these things up for you for $20 or so. GET IT DONE or DO IT YOURSELF!!! If you have an EXHAUST leak, it was PROBABLY started by a dirty IAC valve, like the DOMINO effect! USE Mobil one 0W-30 engine oil. This will IMPROVE your power and economy and keep your expensive engine sensors CLEAN, since NO sludge will form inside the engine or it's sensors! Once your CLEAN the T body and the iac, reward your engine with a fresh set of BOSCH Fusion spark plugs. These fire fuel CHEMICALLY as well as ELECTRICALLY and will improve power and economy even MORE!!! Your engine was designed by PORSCHE for FORD's use. It DESERVES the best of care!! The SYNTHETIC mobil oil will allow you to have ONE oil change a year, instead of 3 or 4 changes that make SLUDGE and harm your sensors with acidic oil vapors. GOOD LUCK!!

it,s winter here in PA. too ! try changing the fuel filter. dirt can collect in the filter overnight and slow the flow of fuel until the dirt gets washed away.

Try running some fuel-injector cleaner through it the next time you fill up.
