Shipwrecks: Environmental Disaster?

With the disaster in Italy, I have heard concerns of a possible environmental disaster. It made me wonder what harm the sunken ships in The Gulf of Mexico during WW2 caused?

According to the website below, 56 ships were sunk, most during a few months in 1942. Id imagine many were merchant ships, some probably filled with oil.

Any opinions on this?

Not all shipwrecks were created equal

some wrecked ships are used to create artificial reefs to house marine life.

many ships now have the capacity to carry much more oil than they did "back in the day", so older wrecks may not have too much oil to leak, but even if they did...there does exist bacteria that can break down oil and clean it out of the ecosystem. We saw some of this happening with the Gulf spill

I would be more worried bout all the plastic particulates. or the "Island of garbage"
