Can someone intelligent help me understand this sentence better?

"When you stare into the face of this mystery we call 'gorilla,' you are moved to consider not conservation solely but the fundamental issues of our time-dignity, compassion, the indisputable sanctity of life. If we are to undo the dark legacy of colonialism, of which the mountain gorilla is, in a disturbingly real sense, latterly a victim, it is upon these issues that we must stand.

what exactly is this saying? especially this part? but the fundamental issues of our time-dignity, compassion, the indisputable sanctity of life.

What a terrible, overly poetic sentence!

Here is what it is basically saying: When you see a mountain gorilla, it makes you think. Your first thought probably would be something like "Mountain gorillas are cool. We should save them from going extinct.". But you don't only think about saving mountain gorillas. You think about other important things too. Some of the most important issues we deal with in this period of time that we live in. You think about things like: respect or appreciation of self or others (dignity), caring about the feelings of other people (compassion), and the fact that life is sacred and important, a fact nobody can argue with. If we want to get rid of the bad effects that colonialism has had, we need to remember and use these values.

Colonialism, btw, is the practice where the technologically advanced European nations would set up colonies in other less-developed parts of the world and exploit the native people and their resources. This practice of colonialism ended up hurting the mountain gorilla.
