Because when the gods moved to Rome, their personalities changed (and their names).

The Roman gods were more warlike, united. Cared more about expansion, conquest, and discipline.

    Hera became Juno

    Zeus became Jupiter

    Poseidon became Neptune

    Hermes became Mercury

    Ares became Mars

Rome first began as nothing more than a small town inhabited by the Latins. Greece had the dominant culture of the area. As the Roman empire grew, they adopted the Gods of the Greeks. The Romans changed the names to Latin ones.

they are not "similar" gods, they are the same ones, the religion was borrowed by the Romans from the greeks. the reason why they have different names is because they spoke a different language than the greeks and made their gods their own.

When the Romans conquered Greece, they admired Greek culture, so they copied it. They didn't want to look like they were copying the Greeks so they gave the gods different names and slightly different personalities.

    Poseidon became Neptune

    Zeus- Jupiter

    Ares- Mars

    Artemis- Diana

    Athena- Minerva

    Hades- Pluto

    Aphrodite- Venus

    Hermes- Mercury

    Hephasteus- Vulcan

    Hera- Juno

    Hestia- Vesta

    Demeter- Ceres

Apollo- Apollo(they didn't change his name)
