Is it difficult to own a non-neutered dog?

We are looking into buying a dog. We have found one we want, but with the condition that the dog cannot be neutered. What type of problems present in dogs that have not been neutered?

By the way, the dog we have found is a yellow labrador.

Sounds to me as if the breeder may want to use the dog at stud at some point, and that might cause more problems that it's worth. Stud dogs can be obnoxious for weeks when they've bred a female.

If that's the case, find out if the dog's current owner expects YOU to look after the females that are sent to your dog to be bred, or whether they'll take your dog to their house. Believe me, you don't want the responsibility of housing an in-season female, worrying that she might escape and get bred by another dog (or killed by a car), plus have to listen to your male howl his head off because he wants to be with her all the time.

So find out your obligations. As to keeping an intact male, they are more likely to mark their territory, more likely to try to escape if a female is in heat anywhere in the neighborhood, and more aggressive around other males. Not a big deal if you're willing to train the dog and maintain control.

  • Not if you're responsible. Owning an intact male is not much different from owning a neutered male.

EDIT: Some breeders will place a male that they think is good quality but they don't have room for in a pet home so that the dog can enjoy living with a family instead of being in a kennel. But they will keep the right to breed him once they see how he turns out.

None if its a dog and left with its family until at least 8 weeks better 9 or 10 weeks but still that's me but if its a ***** then you could have pups every year if not watched. Why can't the dog be neutered is it medical because once you have bought it, its yours and you can do as you wish except harm and abuse the animal

What person requires THAT? Makes no sense. Once you own the dog it's yours to neuter unless you have shared breeding rights.

I'd reconsider the dog if this is the requirement.

why can it not be neutered? A responsible breeder will usually stipulate that their dogs MUST be neutered in their contracts with exceptions given to show homes. (for dogs being used for showing or working)

That sounds a bit ridiculous. Your dog should be neutered unless he is an exemplary specimen of his breed, registered with the KC of your country, x-rayed and guaranteed for health problems, and is either going to be a show dog or working dog.

If he is a pet.... have him neutered. You will save yourself a lot of grief. Un-neutered dogs are harder to train, are VERY interested in female dogs all of the time, they are more prone to disease such as prostate cancers, and they are territorial which in turn brings aggression towards other dogs and sometimes people, and lifting their legs and peeing on everything.

Your choice, but my advice is to leave the breeding to the breeders and castrate the pets. A neutered animal is a better pet.

Color doesn't matter. He just happens to be a labrador that's yellow. No real health issues, but you need to make sure he'll never get loose. I would honestly not buy from someone who says not to neuter.

Why on earth would they stick a condition on it that it can't be neutered?

I would stay well clear, as these sellers are strange and obviously know very little about dogs and breeding.

Unneutered males are problems. Apart from a life time of feeling frustrated, you will have problems using boarding kennels, straying, and prostate issues.
