I'm new to diabetes, help?

I was diagnosed yesterday, Saturday 21, 2012 with diabetes, I'm 49, I had been drinking all kinds of fluids and using the restroom like a sieve for over 6 weeks. Now I have diabetes. I was feeling quite well.

What kind of advice can you give me, a new comer?

This is the step for you to take:

There are 4 key steps to controlling glucose levels :

    1) EXERCISE- Walking is fine but Nordic Walking is Great. Exercise also lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and lowers Blood Pressure. Google it.Exercise is Non-Negotiable !!!Thats why it is Number 1 on the list.

    2) Knowledge- http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.ph%E2%80%A6 This is a great site for info

    3) Meds. Metformin to start. Never , ever take Actos or Avandia. Or januvia or Onglaza >

    4) Diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

    Take care

I was diagnosed 21 years ago, and for me, being told I was a diabetic was good news for me. No one ever took care of me, and when I was told that I now have diabetes (2) that was the first day that I started taking care of me!!!

I made an appointment to attend the Diabetes class and was blessed that Georgetown University was having a 2-day seminar on Diabetes. I stopped my Christmas responsibilities and attended that fantastic class. My doctor was surprised how aggressively I was treating my disease. I am not perfect, but miraculously my A1C is 6.3. My doctor thought that I would get it under 6.0 and be in tight control. I have had lots of demons to deal with and I am happy that I maintain an A1C under 7!!!

I would advise that you go to the library and check out the latest books on Diabetes. Also, check to make sure that the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is listed -- and favorably. The former TV cooking host, Graham Kerr (the Galloping Gourmet) has turned diabetic chef following his wife's sudden severe stroke and the diagnosis of Diabetes. He has a great book called "Charting your Course." It is a workbook for Diabetics. You might be able to get a copy from eBay or Amazon.

I suggest getting library books so that you can review them and see if they are helpful, instead of buying something that you don't like.

You will do fine. Of all the diseases, this isn't the worst. It takes attitude and commitment. Take charge and be the captain of your team (medical docs, nutritionists, etc.)

Feel free to email me if you would like a Diabetic Buddy.

Healthy diet and exercise is the most important part of your life from now on to keep yourself healthy and to stop your diabetes from causing problems with your internal organs, you also have too watch your blood pressure and cholesterol/ By exercise i don't mean hours in the gym, an extra 30 minutes walking 5 days a week will keep you healthy and when i say healthy diet I do not mean these stupid low calorie types, you have to be careful with the carb, junk foods and chocolate and puddings, you have to lear to balance out your diet, you will have blood tests every 6 months and your doctor will arrange for you to see a dietitian to discuss your diet, I was diagnosed 2 years ago, Good Luck

I had posted the question originally 4 years ago. I took insulin, metformin or glucophage not more than 3 months combined. I knew drugs were not for me. I went to doing exercise 7x per week, weights, walking, bicycle. I eat just about what I want within reason but I took a twist. I took out coffee since January 2016 and all for the better. My glucose levels are below 98 quite steadily. I think what happens since cafeine is a stimulant, it inhibits insulin release into the blood stream, like saying "insulin you stay there, I have it now". And it does work. I would say that drinking Zero type drinks was one I took out of the equation and it is working for me. Best to you all.

Healthy diet and exercise can control type 2 diabetes. See the dietician to see what you can eat and how much!

Well, everybody has different ways to deal with it and I will give you my way and it is good whether you are Type 1 or 2.

I was diagnosed type 1 which is the worst but now I do not need any insulin because my body recovered and healed the damage to my pancreas. How? I eat raw, fresh and organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and no carbohydrate like white bread and flour, pasta, rice, candy, cake, cookies, sodas and so on.

Exercise well and keep it fun. I have noticed that when I'm having fun while exercising, it effects my blood sugar like 100 times better! Your body needs a perfect pH balance, then your body is able to heal and recover from it. I am a living proof but I can't say more than that. I eat a lot of LCHF(low carb high fat) and Alkaline food and combine it perfect!

Write a diary every time you check your blood sugar and write what you did, what you ate or will be doing and will be eating and so on. This gives you a good overlook on what causes what on your blood sugar.

Eat less but more often. Easier for the body to take care of and keeping the blood sugar balanced. I recommend the book "Conscious health" by Ron Garner.

    Have a great life! :)
