The truth about Blue Buffalo dog food?
I'm getting a puppy soon and was researching dog food brands. I came across Blue Buffalo and was pleased that they don't use by-product meal, but after reading some of the comments I have become worried about problems it might cause such as vomiting and diarrhea. Can somebody tell me the truth?

When getting your pup start with the same brand the breeder is feeding. After the pup has adjusted, 3 - 4 weeks, begin adding a few pieces of the new food each day. If the pup has diarrhea or is vomiting add fewer pieces until the digestive system has time to adjust. Blue Buffalo Wilderness and Taste of the Wild are both good brands. All dogs are different. Some with sensitive stomachs have difficulty with food ingredients. Transitioning very slowly is essential to avoiding digestive upset. People often forget to look at the ingredients in the treats or table food they are feeding which can be the source of problems instead of the kibble.

The truth is there is nothing but hype, speculation, anecdotes, and lies supporting feeding Blue Buffalo or any other food. I feed Pro Plan. Can I post a single link to a study where separate groups of dogs were fed it and other foods? No. I do know people with much better access to hard data recommend it and how well my dogs and thousands of others I have seen eating it do.
There are also plenty of posts here and on other dog sites where somebody made a careful, slow switch to Blue Buffalo or other quality food without byproducts and the puppy had digestive problems. Now with a total lack of evidence that Blue Buffalo is the least bit better than Old Roy, it is rational to switch away from the breeder's food? Oh, byproduct meal has feathers in it? If somebody has proof of that, they need to report it at http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/R... Same with many other of the ick factors used to sell premium foods. I can't tell if people repeating that stuff are lying or too stupid to check their facts.

The truth is Blue Buffalo is a very low quality food and is way overpriced. Yes it does not use by-products which is good. But it still has the same protein, fat and carbohydrate levels as the cheapest foods on the market. That mean it has a very low meat content. Any food high in carbohydrates is low in meat, since meat does not contain carbohydrates, only plants do. Blue is over 50% carbs, which means it is well over half plant matter, since plants also contain protein and fats. Dogs can have plants in their diet, but their diet shouldn't be mostly plants. The worst thing about Blue is it contains a very high amount of barley grain. Barley is one of the worst grains you can feed a dog. I would much rather my dog eat a high corn dog food than high barley. Barley is highly inflammatory and contains a type of lectin that causes damage to the digestive tract. This damage leads to digestive issues, allergies, and skin problems. I found this out the hard way. Believing the hype about Blue I fed it to my dog for about a year. She did fine on it for a while, but started to have loose stools. I didn't realize the food was causing it and continued to feed it. Eventually she started having horrible allergies and skin infections all over her body. She lost tons of hair and she just smelt horrible. I spent hundreds of dollars at the vet on medications trying to get to the bottom of what was causing it. The vet never said anything about food and I didn't think it could be food because Blue was supposed to be so good. Finally out of desperation I took her off Blue and put her on a high quality highly digestible food and in one month all her problems went away. I cannot recommend Blue or any other high carb high grain based dog food. The best quality foods are going to be high protein, very low carb and high moisture. Dry foods are the worst. Canned foods would be better. Vital by Freshpet is an excellent choice or if you are interested in raw, Bravo and Primal are also excellent choices. Right now I am doing a well balanced homemade diet and my dog has gone from really sickly to amazingly healthy. I definitely recommend it.

Blue Buffalo is a good brand of food. I had my bulldogs on it for over a year but last month they started having skin issues so I switched them off of it and they are currently doing good on taste of the wild which is actually a little cheaper then the Blue Buffalo too.

Our cats eat Blue Buffalo cat food (both dry and canned) and have never had a problem. So I would expect the puppy to be fine with BB puppy food.

RAW FEED!!! If you want your dog to live a long healthy life i suggests you raw feed its much better some dogs can take both one day kibble one day raw which is okay as well buy a good band of dog food if anything and add some vegies for enzymes.

My vet has studied canine nutrition and Blue Buffalo is the only brand of dog food that he recommends. He does not sell any dog food.
