Who do you suppose Peter was talking about in 2 Peter 3; 3 sounds like some on this site?

3. Knowing this first, That there shall come in the last days SCOFFERS, walking after there own lusts.

4. And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, All things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

In 1,000 years, it will sound like some then.

In 2,000 years, it will sound like some then.

    In 3,000 years...

  • What were the "last days" of?

Can't be planet earth... it endures forever (Eccl 1:4, Psa 78:69, 104:5).

Jesus was manifested in "these last days" - so they were first century days, near the end of the age. What age? The Jewish Mosaic Covenant. This age ended in AD 70, within a generation as Jesus said.

Believe it or not, 40 years was a long time to wait for Jesus' return, and there were apparently people scoffing as AD 70 neared. But He did return then, because His return was all about restoring God's Presence to mankind, living within us. This could only happen once the Temple (His prior dwelling) was destroyed.

It was all about the end of the OLD COVENANT... which went out with a bang during the Roman Jewish War (66-70AD). This was communicated with cosmic, apocalyptic, symbolic language that people mistranslate literally today.

There will always be scoffers, but Peter was talking about his own generation of scoffers here.
