Do you have to neuter/geld Alpacas?
My mother has 10 acres. We were thinking about getting a few Alpacas to put in her pasture. My adult daughter is interested in the wool while my mom would enjoy just having something in her pasture. I found a heard/3 of male Alapcas on CL and inquired if they needed to be neutered. I was told that they don't neuter them, but when I look online it clearly says to neuter them. So do they need to be neutered to harvest their wool? Do they become smelly like goats? If they have been together for over 5 years will they be less likely to fight?
Thanks

Male alpacas do not need to be neutered. They will get along just fine without gelding them. They do not become smelly like goats. Alpacas have almost no smell to them. As long as there are no female alpacas around they shouldn't fight at all. There is a pecking order so they may wrestle or argue from time to time.
However if you want their fleece to stay fine then you need to geld them. Alpaca's fleece will become coarser as they age if they are not gelded.
Also please be aware that all male alpacas after 2 years of age have fighting teeth. They need to be cut down so they don't hurt one another when they play or wrestle.

They are great family pets. They do need to be neutered & do become smelly. They tend to live 15-25 years.

Alpaca, a canines. propose that you walk with a reliable length stick and use it if it receives too close to to you. quite a few circumstances l had that journey and the owner became close to via, l instructed them that if the canines consists of close to to me l will kill it and l ought to. They take the canines in for concern of dropping a canines. you could also carry a water pistol with some stuff in it an spray them in the eyes.
