  • How to correct young mare 's aggression?

We are training a young mare and gelding that are spoiled. After finally accomplishing lunging and taking them on many walks around their neighborhood, we are ready to pony them with our horses.

Both the mare and gelding have shown some aggressive behaviors during training. The gelding nips a lot and is mouthy and the mare has turned her butt toward me on several occasions in the round pen.

Now that we are ready to try ponying the mare has displayed even more aggression and when introduced to my horse has twice turned and kicked him. She even tries to kick through the round pen. She has never been around other horses.

The gelding, although at first tried biting the mounted horse a lot, has settled down and is able to be ponied with not much hassle.

    The mare is 2 1/2.

    The gelding is 2.

  • Do you have to neuter/geld Alpacas?

My mother has 10 acres. We were thinking about getting a few Alpacas to put in her pasture. My adult daughter is interested in the wool while my mom would enjoy just having something in her pasture. I found a heard/3 of male Alapcas on CL and inquired if they needed to be neutered. I was told that they don't neuter them, but when I look online it clearly says to neuter them. So do they need to be neutered to harvest their wool? Do they become smelly like goats? If they have been together for over 5 years will they be less likely to fight?

    Thanks

  • I heard of some underweight horses...?

..in the next town over. So I made a trip out there to see for myself. The owner acted as though they were all fine.

Animal Control was called and concluded the issue wasn't severe enough for them to intervene. They said that she has been reported a lot and at least she has narrowed her heard down from 20. They also concluded that the three year old roan stallion was only moderately thin! Originally the owner was going to give me a couple of the horses.( I really didn't want them, but wanted to get them out of there) I said I would go home and talk it over with my husband.

Meanwhile the AC officer told the owner that she was reported by someone who had made a recent visit to her place and took photos. So, when I called the woman to see if she still wanted to give up a couple of horses she was livid.

I think the AC officer was out of line and made poor judgment calls regarding the situation and the horses.

  • Is this bit gentle or harsh? I get mixed feed back from everyone!?

I just got this bit and I love it. I am getting mixed reviews from people saying that these are harsh. I bought it because I thought it was gentler and more comfortable. I have two other bits like this with the sweet mouth etc. Minus the roller. I have always used them.

What is the gentlest and harshest bit? Just curious.

  • Ok. I used Equi Spot on my horse and....?

As I was applying it to his the top of his head, he tossed his head getting it on his forelock. I put a fly mask on him and pulled the hair out so it wouldn't touch his eyes. A few hours later he has rubbed off the mask and one eye is runny looking. I rinsed his eyes out. He wasn't too keen on the idea. and I'm hoping for the better. But I would like some feedback if anyone has had a similar experience and how it turned out.

I will take him to the vet Monday if he still looks questionable. It is Saturday night and we don't really have any vets available until then.

  • My horse has "hives" again?

Okay so just about one year ago I posted about my horse breaking out in hives. Small bumps covering his body in patches. Just this evening I went out to the pasture and he has these terrible, ugly nickel to quarter sized bumps on his chest. Only his chest this time. What is it? I can't say if it is the same thing as last year. It's definitely in a different place, and bigger!

Last year they went away after a couple of weeks. I stopped feeding the mixed hay and watched his diet. Then gradually went back to everything as usual. I bought a histamine but never used it. I sprayed him down with anti fungal spray. I can't be certain what worked or what caused it. Nothing has changed but the weather. His paddock has no Oak Trees in it. There are some on the property. It's awful. This year I am posting pics.

  • Video from Sony Handycam to Computer?

I tried downloading drivers. My computer will not detect the usb. I tried going to windows media and searching from there. I have plugged the usb to the front and searched for it that way...nothing.

My camera is a Sony Handycam dc30/hc40. I bought it several years ago, and never figured out how to get the videos off of it. Then my son had the camera for a couple of years so I didn't use it. Now I really want to get some footage off of the camera onto the computer for editing. HOW?

Ok my husband is a teacher. A sister to one of his students sold him a hedgehog for a class room pet. I have never heard of such a thing. Indeed it is the cutest thing I have seen in a long while. But as a pet? I didn't know you could keep them as pets. Can you? Do you know anything about them?

  • Why is my dogs coat is rough after flea treatment?

Over a month ago i put a flea treatment on my JRT/Chihuahua. The kind you put down their back to their tail. Since then his coat in that area is coarse and he is shedding. At first we thought he was having a reaction to the chlorine in the pool as he likes to swim. We have bathed him several times since and he hasn't been swimming lately and still his coat is bad in that area. For awhile he also had a rash under his forlegs and itchiness. He is still a bit itchy but the rash is gone.I don't think it is lice as there is no evidence of such. I dewormed him also.

  • What is eating my horse skin?

Okay I know flies can cause damage but we don't have an abundance of flies and two of our horses have shown signs raw areas. Mostly on their heads.

We had taken our old gelding to the vet two weeks ago before the flies even began and he already had this going on. The vet suggested flies but said it was unlikely since they weren't even out yet. We were left without an answer since that wasn't the only reason for the visit.

Then I brought home a new horses and the same thing happened within a week. What is it? We do have Oak trees, and tons of Chamomile in the pastures. These two horse are not kept together. I applied swat a couple of days, and then corona today, put on their fly masks, and spray them down with spray. They are healing, but i want to know the cause.

My new horse has it on the skin under his flank, and throat too.

  • Can I fill my nitrogen tires with regular air?

I have a heavy duty Ford pick up that I pull my horse trailer with. Last time I got tires they put nitrogen in them and said it was better. Well ok but now my tire is low and I need air. I live in a small town that doesn't have many services on Sunday and I need to pull a trailer tomorrow. Can I use regular air from a gas station?

  • Should I sell my 5 year old mare?

Since my mare retired, then died, I have been searching for the perfect replacement. I had her since she was born and she lived nearly 30 years. She was a Buckskin. I love Buckskins.

Ok well last summer I bought a little mare that needed some work. Buckskin of course. BEAUTIFUL.

They said she had ground work and had been saddled. So I decided to see what she was about. I promptly ended on the ground...with her on top of me. Seems she likes to rear up and over. UGH.

Longer story a little shorter, Months of working with her, injuries to others, a few successful trail rides, ...She suffers an injury to her hind leg. She is down for a month. Welcome back the attitude. So I sent her to a trainer for a month. Went to pick her up. Tried her out at the trainers to see her progress, and she takes to Bucking! Not hard bucking but bucking none the less. I am getting too old for this. So I ask you, should I sell her and keep looking? I love her.

Here is a link if you want to see her.

  • Should I be mad that the worming schedule is off?

Me again. Regarding....mother in law again. So yea she keeps her horse in our pasture. She is concerned because her horse seems to be dropping weight. They all get the same amount of food. Her horse is fed separately per her request. So last night during dinner I mention that it is time to worm the horses. I specifically told her that because they are all in the same pasture I want to make sure they are all de wormed at the same time. I told her that I used strongid last time and they are due for a zimectrin. Again I said that mine are due and they all need to be done at the same time. So she comes over today takes her horse out and worms him. Then comes in and tells me that she couldn't wait. WTF. I mean she didn't even think about it until I mentioned it then suddenly she can't wait for me to get my wormer. Am I overreacting? PS. I order my wormer on line at horse.com so it takes a few days.

  • What do you think of slow feeders?

Ok me again. My mother in law was going to buy some fancy slow feeder bag for her horse, only guess what he is in my pasture with my horses. She would have had to buy at least three. So I fashioned my own slow feeders using the existing feeders we had and added extra grates to them so the hay is harder to get to. The first thing my mother in law did was as my husband to remove the grate from her horses feeder. Ok. Then I continued to use my feeder for the other horses. I would feed them in the sides with no grate and then fill the grated part so they could"graze" all day. This has been working beautifully. But my mother in law implores me to please remove the grates. "They can't get their hay, etc." I have told her I feed them their regular food and that is a supplement but she doesn't get it. AHHHHHHH! Now I told her they must be eating it because it is all gone by evening feed time. And she says she took it out occasion when we weren't around. Can you even believe?
