Why is my dogs coat is rough after flea treatment?

Over a month ago i put a flea treatment on my JRT/Chihuahua. The kind you put down their back to their tail. Since then his coat in that area is coarse and he is shedding. At first we thought he was having a reaction to the chlorine in the pool as he likes to swim. We have bathed him several times since and he hasn't been swimming lately and still his coat is bad in that area. For awhile he also had a rash under his forlegs and itchiness. He is still a bit itchy but the rash is gone.I don't think it is lice as there is no evidence of such. I dewormed him also.

How old is he is he red on the front and not the back is he losing hair around the face? It could be demodectic mange. This is the non contagious version. You can get treatment from the vet. If he is red all over Front and back feet.. He could have allergies, a vet can tell you an antiallergin that is safe for your pet. If the skin in just dry a good tar and salpher bath will help loads. It makes the fur soft as well as helping the skin.

I know you said you don't want to take him to the vet, but do so and let them test his skin for the right treatment. But that might be possibly too expensive. Over bred dogs get skin problems, and if he is in pain, I dunno........Maybe....Nvmind
