Video from Sony Handycam to Computer?
I tried downloading drivers. My computer will not detect the usb. I tried going to windows media and searching from there. I have plugged the usb to the front and searched for it that way...nothing.
My camera is a Sony Handycam dc30/hc40. I bought it several years ago, and never figured out how to get the videos off of it. Then my son had the camera for a couple of years so I didn't use it. Now I really want to get some footage off of the camera onto the computer for editing. HOW?

Hello. First of all, your camcorder came with an USB cable. Basically this cable quite useless when came to importing video to your PC. Your camcorder came with i-LINK (Also known as FIREWIRE or IEEE-1394 or MICRODV Connector). This is what you use to transfer your video to your PC. (Note : The USB cable is for transfer your IMAGE capture in your Memorystick into your PC) Secondly, your PC need also to have FIREWIRE connector. Since this is a non standard port in most PC, you might need to purchase a FIREWIRE PCI Card.(Newer mainboard may already have the port). Once your camcorder and PC have the FireWire connector, just get the correct matching cable (4 pin to 4 pin, 4 pin to 6 pin - Normally your camcorder is using a 4 pin and your PC a 6pin) OK. We have the hardware issue resolved, next the software. Get yourself a GOOD videoEditing Software. My favorite is ULEAD VideoStudio Ver.11+. I personally have been using the software since ver.4 and found it very easy and have loads of feature. As a matter of preference, you could also use SONY Vegas, Pinnacle Studio or Adobe Premier. Windows XP also came with MovieMaker but lacks of professional features but adequate for a SIMPLE capturing and editing. (The best feature for MovieMaker that it's FREE). Hope this will help you. Best Regards.

If this is a minidv camcorder then USB will not work, you need a firewire connection and your computer needs a firewire card, many computers do not come with a firewire port.
