Question about "The Waltons" TV show?

I have recently discovered the TV show called "The Waltons" in the last few months. I love it! I had never seen it before until about 5 or 6 months ago! I was born in 1980, so the show was about over by the time I was born. It's on the Hallmark channel now.

One thing I couldn't figure out is how nobody smokes on the show! I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't smoke, I hate being around it, and I'm glad they don't smoke on the show, but it just surprised me! Backwoods Virginia in the 1930s-40s, everyone would've been smoking! The show was made in the 1970s so I'm sure everyone on the set would've been smoking too! I'm glad they don't smoke on the show, because it makes it more relateable to younger people of today (many of whom don't smoke), and we can focus more on the show's positive moral messages rather than outdated things like everyone smoking, but it just pleasantly surprised me! I'm sure even now, nearly everyone in backwoods Virginia smokes! Any thoughts about why they chose to not have smoking in the show? I'm just glad they didn't!

There was an episode where John Boy had taken to smoking a pipe but he almost burnt the house down, there was no smoking after that.

There was an episode ( 7) called "The System" in season 3. Jason notices Ben acting strangely and spies on him to find out that he has been smoking cigarettes. He tells Grand Pa who takes Ben out fishing and makes him smoke and Ben ends up getting sick and promises to never smoke again. We have been watching the old episodes on cable and that's the only episode that I have seen smoking other than the one when John Boy starts smoking the pipe because he believes it will help him have inspiration to write and catches the house on fire!

I was in my teens when that show was on, and they wanted to portray the family as a wholesome family with very religious family values that included no smoking, and no drinking of alcohol.

Because they wanted the family to appear as a good family struggling through the depression, but still maintain good values and beliefs.
