What do the numbers in a double play mean?

I've heard commentators say things like a 6-4-3- double play, yet I've never quite understood what it means.

The numbers just tell you which players turned the double play. A 6-4-3 means it was the shortstop, to the second baseman, to the first baseman. The 6-4-3 or the 4-6-3 are probably the most common ones. They use these numbers so it's easier to tell what happened in a game if one is reading a score card.

    1 - Pitcher

    2 - Catcher

    3 - First Baseman

    4 - Second Baseman

    5 - Third Baseman

    6 - Shortstop

    7 - Left Field

    8 - Center Field

    9 - Right Field

    Hope this helps!

Each position is assigned a number, which you can find from a quick google search.

So a 6-4-3 double play is when the ball is hit to the shortstop (6), he throws it to the second basemen (4), and the second basemen throws it to first base (3) to complete the double play.

Each position on the field is numbered 1-9.

    1- Pitcher

    2- Catcher

    3- First base

    4- Second base

    5- Third base

    6- Short stop

    7- Left field

    8- Center field

    9- Right field

6-4-3 means the ball went to the SS, he threw to ball to second, and the second basemen through it to first.
