Why does my mind become so hyperactive before sleep?

Every night for most of my 20 year life I have had trouble falling asleep. I will be completely exhausted (even when sick) and as soon as my head hits the pillow...boom. Wide awake. My mind won't shut off, even when I try to, I'll have a blank mind for a second then a million thoughts come rushing back in.

Any recommendation on what I could do to make falling asleep easier? My doctor recommended sleeping pills, but I really have no interest in taking medication. Is it possible my mattress is the cause? Could there be other reasons? I'm at my wits end!

I do this sometimes, too -- however, my husband sleeps as soon as his head hits the pillow! He says it's the sign of a clear conscious. I think "creative" people have more more trouble turning off their brains.

One of the causes is that you do not allow yourself a "ramp down" time -

Enough time for your body to transition from stimulation and activity to sleep. I have found that if I read in bed -with a low wattage light (not too bright) - then I can fall asleep after 30 min or so. Read for pleasure - not something overly engaging -or technical- or exciting (the purpose is to fall asleep).

Sometimes I take 1/2 Tylenol PM (OTC) - it is not narcotic or habit forming -- but might make your mouth dry - the active ingredient is the same as Benadryl - I can actually sleep without dreams - or rearranging furniture in my sleep~~

    Hey Kristine,

    Greetings!!!

One thing i like in you is not to take sleeping pills & medications. Well, the way u have explained your problem, it looks like u are very deep thinker. It is good again, but u should know when to pause. U should do meditation at least for 10 - 15 minutes a day. It will really improve your ability to fall a sleep, not only that but it will give u more mentally relax & u will feel more healthy mentally. Instead of going to doctors & waste dollars behind their treatment why don't u try yoga classes? U can find at least 1 hour a day for it & please don't say no. Yoga is all time better than going to gym & again it is the secret of being very fit & healthy not only physically but mentally as well. Reduce the amount of coffee per day (if u have). Take care & Good Luck!! :-)
