Best way to connect AV Equipment?

I recently purchased a Samsung Smart TV. Very happy with the picture quality.

Having some issues with sound sync though which is slighty out.

This got me thinking about how my system is wired.

Currently I have a PS3 connected to the TV via a HDMI 1.3 cable. The PS3 is also connected to a AV amp via optical cable.

Few questions:

Would I be better connecting the PS3 to TV via HDMI and then connecting the TV to the amp via optical cable ?

I have tried this option but only have the choice of Linear PCM and an other option I cant recall in the PS3 setting menu. Does this mean I cannot output Dolby Digital via HDMI ?

Would a HDMI 1.4 cable make any difference ?

Notes - amp (receiver) has no HDMI input / outputs.

Dolby digital is output to receiver if connected by optical from PS3

Any help / advice appreciated

Update:

OK - some good answers.

Next question:

If I use a HDMI cable to connect the PS3 to the TV and then the TV's optical output to connect to the AVR - the only options available in the PS3 Audio settings menu are Linear PCM 2 channel options - the rest are greyed out but can be selected manually.

I take it that this is because the TV itself is only 2 channel ?

If I add the option of Dolby Digital and DTS output in the PS3 menu manually will this

A - Damage the TV in anyway

B - Output Dolby Digital from the TV if I use the TV's optical output (the TV is capable of outputting Dolby / DTS )

I honestly have never heard of this before, so my answer is simply a strategic guess. I do not believe the 1.4 HDMI will make a difference. Also if you have a delay in sound it is the source of the sound that is the problem. It is getting to one device before the other. Therefore I do believe if you use your television for all audio out you will have no delay.

This is an extremely common problem when upgrading an older analog home theater system. It is referred to as a lip sync issue. An "HDMI 1.4" cable will not help with this issue.

I assume that the video is probably slightly behind the audio. The HDMI input buffer and video processing on a TV often adds a frame or two of video delay, so the picture may lag behind audio that is routed separately to an audio system. Audio usually goes under very little processing.

OPTION 1: Some AVR's enable adding delay to the digital audio to compensate for the video processing delay. You will need to check the documentation on you AVR to see if this is available. Since it does not have an HDMI input, I do not know if it will have this feature.

OPTION 2: Yes, use the audio output from the TV to the AVR would eliminate the lip sync. I thought the PS3 could output Dolby Digital on the HDMI audio, but I do not own one to verify. Online documentation suggests this is available, but there may be limitations that I do not know about. If the PS3 does not support 5.1 audio output, there is no way to get true Dolby Digital sound out the HDMI connector.

OPTION 3: Turn off the video processing options on your TV. These are things like noise reduction, color enhancement, etc. This may or may not reduce the video processing delay. If it creates a noticeable difference in picture quality, you might not like this option.

OPTION 4: Purchase an audio delay processor and run your digital audio to the delay box before the AVR. Adjust the delay to eliminate the sync issue. However, these can cost $200 to $300, so you may want to consider the next option and invest in a new AVR.

OPTION 5: Invest in a new AVR that accepts an HDMI input and supports lip sync adjust. You will probably want to do this at some point in the future, anyway, but this is probably the most costly option.

If you can connect the HDMI's directly to the receiver...DO IT! That will eliminate a lot of the synching issues. I also have a Samsung Smart LED TV and it absolutely has the option to go bitstream or PCM. Go bitstream all the way. On some players you must select the output method. So if you cannot connect directly to the receiver and you just connect HDMI to the TV and optical to the receiver, make sure that the settings reflect your connections. Do 1.4 HDMI cables make a difference. Contrary to other comments...absolutely they do. In fact if you want to successfully transmit 3D, you must use 3D compatible devices as well as 3D compatible cables (v1.4). you should have a sound out on that TV, so if u use a cable from the audio-out from the TV to the audio-in on the AMP instead of from your ps3, you will get the sound at the same time the picture is displayed because that tv cant get that wrong. and this will also mean you can use the amp for anything that you watch on tv or anything else at all.

Just use RGB from TV to sub, plug ps3 into tv using hdmi or optical, will make no difference whatsoever to quality of sound

Either run PS3 to amp via HDMI then amp to TV via HDMI

or PS3 to tv via HDMI then TV to AMP with either HDMI or OPTI.

Both will cut out the dual signal and better your lag time, if your amp does not support video, I highly recommend updating.

Your connection is correct and HDMI 1.4 make no difference.

a hardship-free floor on the signal/DC fringe of the kit can help in eliminating noise. It would not unavoidably might want to be linked to the AC skill floor in truth in quite some situations connecting it to the skill floor is undesirable.
