Petal or rubber overreachers?

Ok, so my pony overreaches which has never been a problem as he didn't wear shoes.. well now he has a full set and is striking his front heels, so I need some overreachers. I was going to get rubber but someone at my yard said don't use rubber because if the horse treads on it, they don't break as easily as petal boots (the plastic ones). So now I don't know what to get, he's being broken to jump x country if it makes a difference? Any experiences of either are welcome :-)

Rubber does break. I have seen many over reach boots with chunks taken out of them due to a horse overreaching.

I wouldn't go for petal overreach boots based on the horrid noise they make, we call them click clacks at our yard, the noise is terrible and you often see horses high stepping to get the things off.

You might want to try something like the professional choice overreach boots but I'm unsure on what their breaking strength are, also the are pretty pricey.

Personally I would stick to the good old fashion rubber ones. They have worked for years and they are cheap enough to buy a new pair if one breaks.

If they are only to be use for riding, then get the Velcro ones. If the are to be used in the field as well then get the pull on ones, although you may need a strong person to put them on.

I use rubber over reach boots :)

The petal ones make an awful noise and they don't look very nice! If a horse is able to "stand" on them then they are too big... but if your horse catches on them then the rubber ones wont tear as easily. Sometimes they tear if your horse has massive studs in for cross country but if you normally put duck tape on all your boots (we do, so they don't get lost) then it wont tear. And besides, you get more colour choices for the rubber ones (im not mad... just joking!)

The petal ones can also damage your horses legs - the buckles are sharp and cut into the horse.

I personally think the rubber ones protect them better and last longer (they're also considerably cheaper)

The only problem with the rubber ones is if you have to turn the horses out in the field wearing them - ours regularly whip one off but seen as they are bright colours and get washed every other day then we always find them :)

Have fun with your cross country!

I do not think there is a lot of difference in my experience. The rubber ones are notoriously difficult to get on or off unless you have them with a leather belt running through them at the top. The ones with velcro straps are next to useless as they start to get matted and are difficult to do up and stay done up. The petal ones are fine because they usually have a strap or something at the top to make them easier to get on and off. Really, the choice is yours.

The whole reason why you want them to stay on is so that your horse will not lose them the instant he runs into himself or steps on the boots.

I have always used rubbers ones but have thought about using the petal ones but what puts me off is that I have heard that the buckle on the petal ones can rub on the horses leg. I'm not sure why you would want the boot to break if the horse trod on it?

It would be great if you could talk with a good Farrier. Often when a horse over reaches, the front toes can be shortened and rolled so they will roll over and get out of the way sooner. I do not how they do the hind hooves to slow the roll over of the hinds.

Get rubber or leather "bell" boots. Also ask the blacksmith to work on the problem.

Rubber because they are more flexible if the horse stands on them
