Gift for host family?

At the end of March I am going to Luoyang in Henan, China where I will be staying with a host family for a student exchange for a few weeks.

I love to crochet and for a gift to them I wanted to crochet a blanket. Is this going to be a gift that is very honored in China? If so, are there any recommendations for patterns/colors I should do? Should it be very large? What kind of material should I use?

I appreciate if you even a small amount of time to answer this question. Thank you very much! Have a good day :)

Update:

On my way to China we will be spending about ten hours in a place, six hours waiting for approval, then another twelve hour train ride. I plan to use this time to make most of the blanket. This way I will save a lot of space so I won't have to pay too much extra for carry-on's and such.

Wow, that is so nice of you! I know that red is a lucky color in China. Also it's the Chinese new year of the dragon so maybe if you look into that, you can find some other colors that have meaning.

Ps - just a heads up. Will you have room in your luggage for a blanket? They make you pay for extra baggage these days. I'd look into that too because you wouldn't want any nasty extra charges tompay at the airport

I've had to buy presents for households in Australia and Puerto rico while i used to be doing a application regarding those homestay households and I continually might purchase touristy stuff, no longer junk, however they continually love some thing vital to US or some thing like, in which I'm from we've got the San Francisco bay proper there and something. So we received a few best plates with SF bay on it and also you might get mugs, or might be a few variety of meals that you would believe they might like? Or you as a rule are not able to even carry meals there, so nvm that. I was once pondering Japanese humans are really keen on applied sciences and what no longer, however I'm certain what we've got right here is not any fit for what they have already got there haha. sorry no longer that so much support. well success!

I'm going to stay with a host family too, in ecuador.

i think the best present is what is representative of your country

like me- I'm bringing maple syrup, and treats from canada, as well as a couple of

    refrigerator magnets

i think they would love the blanket, but if its too much work just go with

    sweets and souvenirs
