How can I lower my cholesterol?
I'm 19 and I had a physical about a week and a half ago that said my cholesterol was elevated. When I was mailed the results it said that if it was a serious elevation (or, rather, if there was a problem) that I would've have been called in to speak with the doctor again but I wasn't. So, I'm not freaking out about it or anything because I've had my cholesterol tested in the past and it was well within normal range.
However, is there any way to lower it with a change in diet? What other types of food should I incorporate and expel from my diet to lower it and keep it maintained? My mother also has high cholesterol and takes fish oil tablets daily. Should I try to take something similar maybe once a week?
Thanks.
Also, if it makes any difference, I am overweight (BMI 30) but when I went away for school last semester, my diet consisted largely of pasta, potatoes (baked, fried, shredded and grilled, etc) and pizza because well, that's all they ever really had that didn't look/taste like slop. Since I've been home in the past few weeks, I have started to lose a bit of weight since my diet has become more diverse (thankfully!).

Change your diet to fruit, vegetables, whole grains and omega oils. Exercise every day by walking 30-60 minutes. It works...

Eat foods that are high in niacin. (Vitamin B3) This is a naturally occurring mineral that can lower cholesterol. For an added bonus you can take niacin vitamin pills. Be aware of its side effects of "flushing" where you may sweat or feel warm. Too much of it can be bad for your liver so don't overdo it.
Prescription statin drugs lower cholesterol but the side effects are much worse. Certain fruits (especially grapefruit) block your body from absorbing the active ingredient which can kill.
I also recommend drinking pu-erh tea which you can buy at most Chinese markets. Chinatown would be a good place to look. Teavana might have it too. Oolong tea is a good substitute but it is best to get it loose instead of in bags as this is a higher quality. This stuff is said to lower blood sugar too making it excellent for diabetics. Be careful buying tea off the internet as there are may scammers who sell fake oolong tea.
Another sure way to reduce cholesterol is to limit the amount of animal products you consume. The biggest culprits are pork products and organ meats (liver, heart. etc) Cream often has a lot too.
A vegan diet has zero cholesterol but will lack essential proteins and the B vitamins that are hard to find elsewhere. Fish oil is great too but it alone is not enough
As to your weight, I read about someone online who said he lost 50 pounds in 6 months by quitting his job at McDonald's and not eating their food anymore. I lost a lot of weight through changing my diet and drinking kombucha which you can get at health food stores. (some versions have trace amount of alcohol in them so get the ones that don't, but make sure it is unpasteurized and keep it refrigerated until you drink it.)
Probiotics like kefir (a yogurt like drink) and acidophilus capsules are a good way to keep the gut healthy and really helps with people on the autistic spectrum. (I have Asperger Syndrome.)
Eat less starchy or white foods. (rice, bread, potatoes etc.) Other diverse foods I recommend are seaweed salads, quinoa, chia seeds, and goji berries, and sushi. If you can, avoid high fructose corn syrup, (you'd be surprised at how many things it is in.)
Exercise is also very important. I see a personal trainer once a week who has really helped.
Good luck.

Well, Im only 18, so I dont really have to worry about cholesterol yet hehe, but my grandparents have bad cholesterol and high blood pressure, and he takes Ginkobaloba (Im not sure if thats how you spell it), and exercise. Cut back on the sweets and really fatty foods to. If nothing seems to work, Id look into some prescription meds.
