Why Do Only About 20% of Mormons Qualify For Temple Worship?

Receiving temple ordinances is essential in the Mormon church.

The ordinance of baptism is a covenant to accept the preparatory gospel which includes repentance and baptism. As a person matures spiritually through living the preparatory gospel, the person can then receive temple ordinances designed to bring him into the presence of God.

Moses strived to bring the children of Israel into the presence of God but they lacked the faith and were fearful. Therefore, this opportunity was removed and the Israelites were given the law of Moses to prepare them for a better day.

I do not know the percentage of Mormon adults who are temple worthy. I live in a relatively small branch of the church and virtually all adults are temple worthy. I know that there are some that are not in other area's.

In the Mormon community it is not that difficult for a mature member to become temple worthy. This is because the culture strongly supports morality, family life, service in the church, sustaining of church authorities and receiving a testimony of the truth. Probably the thing that keeps most people out of the temple is the inability to sacrifice their tithing to the Lord. This is a huge indicator of faith and where a persons priorities are.

It isn't really temple "worship," it is temple work. One hundred percent of all Mormons qualify to worship with other members in their chapels.

To qualify for temple WORK, a member must

Attend church services as often as possible

Fulfill all assignments or "callings" given to them

Be honest in dealings with others

Treat his family in a way that is consistent with Christian principles

Sustain the leaders of the church as prophets, seers, and revelators

Pay 10% of his income or increase to the church

Abstain from coffee, tea, tobacco, and alcoholic drinks

Not be a part of an apostate group that advocates plural marriage

    Sustain the local leaders

    Keep the commandments

Live a morally clean life, with no sex before marriage and no sex outside of marriage

Be in every way worthy to enter the House of the Lord

Not all Mormons qualify for a temple recommend. Mostly they don't think the sacrifice is worth the reward, I imagine. What happens to those who don't? They may or may not go to church every week. They may or may not be active and have testimonies. Most of us probably won't know who they are.

Not sure where you get 20%, I think it's higher than that.

If one can't go to the temple, they can't go. It's really not hard to qualify for a temple recommend. I think most people who don't, don't because they have a Word of Wisdom problem, or they are not paying their tithing, or they are not very active in church. A few have morality problems.

They can still participate in our Sunday worship services, and other activities. The temple is not really worship in the traditional sense.

The Church does not release any statistics on temple worthiness, so any statistics you may have heard have been made up by someone and have little if any basis on reality.

    Edit:

The Church does not even release anything about what happens in church disciplinary councils. The church does not release any kind of data of that nature.

Because your statistics may be way off... especially since you have no actual statistics except those like your "GUESTIMATES... misleading others...

But national surveys probably mean that you should have much higher estimates for those who are active...

“American Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us” (New York: Simon and Schuster, 2010), a sociological study conducted by scholars Robert D. Putnam (Ph.D.), and David E. Campbell (Ph.D.)

Among the study’s findings related to Latter-day Saints are the following:

    • Mormons are among the most devout religious groups in the country. (American Grace, 23-24)

    • Mormons are among those most likely to keep their childhood faith as adults. (137-138)

    • Mormons are unusually giving - Collectively Mormons are among the most charitable of Americans with their means and time, both in religious and nonreligious causes. (452)

    • Mormons are among those most friendly toward those of other faiths, including those outside of Christianity. (505-508)

    • Mormons are among the most likely to believe that one true religion exists, but are also the most convinced of any group that those outside their faith can “go to heaven” or gain salvation. (535-537 & 546)

As the "Mormon moment" extends into 2012, the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life released a groundbreaking new survey, the first ever published by a non-LDS research organization to focus exclusively on members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their beliefs, values, perceptions and political preferences. Entitled "Mormons in America:.. " the survey was conducted between Oct. 25 and Nov. 16, 2011... In terms of religious beliefs and practices, the survey makes it clear that Mormons are highly religious — again, not a big surprise... According to Pew, "Mormons exhibit higher levels of religious commitment than many other religious groups, including white evangelical Protestants.... Looking at basic, core religious beliefs, 98 percent say they believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ..."

National Study of Youth and Religion, 2005, UNC, Chapel Hill (U.S. Adolescents Ages 13-17) -- The 2005 National Study found that Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) youth were more likely to exhibit Christian characteristics than Evangelicals (the next most observant group)

A national 2010 Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life survey aimed to test a broad range of religious knowledge, including understanding of the Bible, core teachings of different faiths and major figures in religious history: on questions about Christianity and the Bible, Mormons scored the highest. They also scored second only to Jews in knowledge of Judaism. [Overall, Mormons understand their own doctrines and the Bible better than other Christian denominations.]

A 2009 Gallup Poll confirmed— members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints comprise the most conservative of the major religious groups in the United States. Seventy-nine percent of Mormons attend religious services weekly, almost every week, or monthly. That compares to 53% of the overall American adult population who attend this frequently.
