'plate and find it' was wha my mum often replied to our question 'what;s for dinner the 1940s. was?

was this a common response in families at that time ,,or was it just my mum's idea of humour?

I was born in 1946, so my earliest recollection to this question

would have been in the 1950's.

If I asked my Mum, or Grandma what was for dinner,

I was often told that it was "Windmill Pie".

If you asked, "What's Windmill Pie?

The response was always the same.

"If it goes around, we'll all get some." :)

Yes, except because we were in America, the accent was different! With rationing and our financial state, even though the war was far off, we had many "see what's in the pantry and the ice box" dinners in the 1940s. I used to go to the butcher shop for my mom and get her knuckle bones for soup. The butcher gave them to me free and always made sure there was a tad of meat on them. I still can suck the marrow out of a doorknob!

It never occurred to me to ask. Just sat down to a plate, meat cut up and ate what was there. Always told her after wards that it was good and I meant it too. I did notice that she liked the compliment so guess it became standard. Now looking back, I'm glad I picked up on that. God bless any mother putting food on the table for pennies.

Sounds like your Mum has/had a sense of humour as did my late mother who answered 'hot tongue and cold shoulder'. I never understood what it meant at the time but I do now.

Whats for dinner? What you're given and be grateful, there are starving kids out there. Thereby putting us on a guilt trip to make sure we ate it without moaning.

My son guesses it right just by the look on my face...even before I utter anything :)

If I'm beaming enthusiastically, he gets alarmed! Yeah, that's right...he knows it's something he doesn't like. ;))
