Yankee fans: Why aren't you Met fans?
The response from Yankee fans I see on the internet (upon being called bandwagoners) is that they are supporting their local team. But... there are two local teams, aren't there? There are the Yankees fans, which are always around, and the rare and elusive Mets fans.
If local Yankee fans are not bandwagoners, then why did they choose the Yankees of the Mets? Their disdain for the color orange? An inexplicable phobia of facial hair?

I said this in an older answer, but I'll say it again: 90% of New York Yankee fans pick the Yankees over the Mets after researching the amount of world series rings they have

I've been a Yankee fan since 1954. I'm not from New York, but most of my friends are. And they're Yankee
fans. We're all in our 60's and retired. Guys our age are still Yankees fans because the franchise is not
only committed to winning, they respect the game and the community in which they play. And they
expect the same from their players. The Yankees teams are usually built around franchise players,
quality players who are committed long term. The Yanks want stability.
The Mets on other hand....well. A very important difference between the two franchises, and another
reason the Mets have trouble maintaining a fan base, is best illustrated by the Willie Randolph debacle.
Randolph was a good player for the Yankees and very loyal. When he was passed over in favor of Showalter and then Torre, he didnt say anything, but he was pissed. The fact is. Randolph was never going to be the Yankees manager. Steinbrenner made it clear to his inner circle that Willie didnt have the
right stuff. He started well with the Mets, but they blew that huge lead the last month of the season(161/2
games?) and Willie was out. Well, that's my raison d'tre. It's like my good friend Alec Baldwin said the\
other day, "You know, Herb i've finally decided what I want engraved on my headstone 'There's the Yankees, and then there's everybody else.' Whaddya think?" Splendid!!!!!!!!!Go Yanks!!!

Well I'm from the Bronx, and so are the Yankees. The Mets are in Queens. I have no reason to dislike the Mets. And there's also I come from several generations of Yankees fans, those generations dating back to when they were the New York Highlanders.
Notice how you don't bother asking how Angels and Dodgers fans chose between those two teams, or Cubs and White Sox.
And I bet you're referring to me as the one who brought up supporting the local team, because I know I bring that up.
The general geographic breakdown is as follows:
Yankees: The Bronx, the Hudson Valley (Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, etc. Counties), and New Jersey
Mets: Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Long Island
Upper Manhattan, like above 125th street, generally go for the Yankees since Yankee Stadium is right there across the Harlem River. The rest of Manhattan goes either way.
Obviously that's just a general rule of thumb, like I know a diehard Yankees fan from Brooklyn, old guy who got annoyed that the Dodgers left and did not want to accept the Mets. And if you go far enough south in New Jersey you'll eventually hit Phillies area.

properly, people from Queens is often Mets followers... everywhere else in ny (NYC or the entire state itself) will in all possibility be a Yankees fan... i individually do not basically like the Yankees, yet i assume you won't have the ability to blame those people for being Yankees followers. the fundamental certainty is that no be counted how die not consumer-friendly of a fan you're, activities are only no exciting whilst your team isn't triumphing. The Yankees win lots greater beneficial than the Mets do (for sure) so i assume this is far less annoying to be a Yankees fan, and greater exciting.

I watched the Yankees before I can remember. I would sit down to watch the Yankee games but not the Mets. I guess I was just always a Yankee fan.

I'm a Yankees fan because my parents are, meaning that I was raised as one. I saw my first Yankees game when I was 3. I was born and raised a Yankees fan, not a Met's fan, so I'm not gonna change my team because the Yankee's win.
And many other Yankees fans chose to be Yankees fans because they represent the city more. Many more New Yorkers are Yankees fans because they are the major team in the city, the most well known. This is definitely bandwagon, but this is not me.

The Yankees have been around longer than the Mets have and many times family allegiances factor into what team you root for. That's the same here in Chicago, I'm a White Sox fan and can't stand the Cubs, I was forced to hate the Cubs when I was a kid and to this day I do. It's a family thing, at least it is here.

I think the only logical answer for a young Yankee fan to have is that they were born into it. I know a few people who's parents are Yankee fans, so that's respectable. Most became fans though around 2000 when they whore'd out rings / want Jeter's penis.

First baseball game I ever watch was a yankee game. I got into baseball because of them and I plan to stick with them no matter how bad they turn out to be in the future.
Besides, I don't support local teams. I'm a New Yorker yet I am a Yankees, Spurs and Chargers fan.

Does it really matter? I mean like who you want to like. The Yankees are the king of New York sports of course they are going to be more Yankees fans, there are plenty more Mets fans than you think though.
