Metal roof. Barn steel or sheet steel roofs?

Metal roof (not shingles).

Why is the industry split on ventilation of a metal roof ?

All the roofs in town (20+) have sheet steel and NO SOFFITS nor Ridge vents.

Should i build my roof the same way ?

I am going to spray foam the gables.... such that there will be no leakage and no trapped air in the attic space. Do i create a air gap and vent it ? or just do what everyone else is doing ?

input please ?

thanks

In a hot climate, vent it, in cold, do not vent it..

It is a personal preference. I prefer a shingled roof on a home. I like the variation of color and texture vs. the smooth flat surface of a metal roof. I would never install metal roof over an existing shingled roof. My home has an 8/12 roof pitch and about twice a year I get on it to clean off branches, leaves in valleys, etc. I doubt that I could do that on a flat slick metal roof. I have vent ridge that is very neat looking, I can't see that feature on a metal roof. Roof penetrations can be a problem also as far as appearance. I've seen some very nice looking metal roof jobs - so it's a toss up and your choice.
