How do you suppose a name went from Horseless Carrage, To Automobile, to car?

I was watching an old movie and there is was. Anyone Know? I'm asking here because it's just an idle question, and this is my favorite section.

    Automobile was just one of many names that were attached in the the autocar when they first appeared, which was a shortened version of Automatic Carriage.

    There were already steam engines that ran on the road so the idea was in the air.

    Auto and mobile have latin origins I believe.

    I suppose it was to make things simpler when talking or writing. In some areas, it went from horseless carriage to automobile to auto. Then again in other areas, it went from motor cartage to motor car to car.

    Automobile WAS the first name. "Horseless Carriage" was just a popular colloquialism. Car was a common word for any carrying conveyance.----Railroad "Cars" Mine "Car" Jaunting Car. etc.
