Do cruise lines charge that fuel surcharge they reserve the right to charge?

Just about every cruise line states it "reserves the right to charge upo to $10/passenger/day if crude goes above $65", which it is. But do they actually charge it? If so it can add $300 to my 15 day cruise with no warning. Any experience with it out there?

NO!! not right now. I cruise 3 or 4 times a year and they always have that statement on the web site and in the cruise contract but they have not in the past 5 years charged any oil surcharges. They have it there just in case there is a huge spike in oil prices.

I've been on 12 cruises and only once did we have to pay a fuel surcharge. Even when the cost of fuel went pretty high, the cruise company did not charge. Only when gas was over $4.00 a gallon did we end up paying.. If you can afford a cruise, then a fuel surcharge should not bother you too much. It didn't bother me, though no one likes those pesky extra charges.

Cruise lines did implement fuel surcharges a few years ago (I think most were $7-$8/day). They haven't done so this time around even though oil prices dictate that they can. As it's always a bad PR move, I'd suspect they won't in the wake of the Concordia disaster, but you never know.

Sorry I can't be more definitive, but keep a good thought!

We did a sixteen-nighttime Panama Canal cruise with celebrity decrease back in October. they did no longer cost the gasoline surcharge that they've been "entitled" to. we've a 14-nighttime scheduled for this October and are hoping that they are going to proceed to hold the charges down.

They rarely charge it, presumably because they know it would cause a backlash. I have had to pay it once, however.
