Why did the Mormon church oppose the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s so much?

Why was the Mormon church's reason for opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

""...after the flood we are told that the curse that had been pronounced upon Cain was continued through Ham's wife, as he had married a wife of that seed. And why did it pass through the flood? Because it was necessary that the devil should have a representation a upon the earth as well as God.. " (John Taylor, 3rd Prophet and President of the LDS church)

That's why. Ignorance and racism pretending to be "revelation."

You site one talk by a church leader and assume that the whole church opposed the Civil Rights movement. In reality, the Mormon church has a history of being much more proactive in supporting minorities than most religions.

You also hold the Mormon church to a standard that no other church could have met back in the 60s. I challenge you to find a single church that didn't have any leaders speak out against the Civil Rights movement.

Did you actually read your own reference? If so, how can you write this in good conscience?

NVM, I know that doesn't matter when trying to sling mud.

You're obviously counting on people's general laziness to actually read the long article.

You're counting on them to just accept your assessment of it.

    Many here did lol.

They're slow to look and quick to hate.

    So typical.

He made it perfectly clear that he was for real civil rights for all men, including the black race.

He believed however that there were sinister people using the CRM as a guise to further their agenda which had nothing to do with Blacks but with the promotion of civil discord.

From the brief read I could get talked about the descendants of Laman and Lemuel. Are you saying that we believe them to be the black people? If that is your position or the position of the article, well, your wrong.

What you have missed is that from the early days of the Church the LDS people have sought for equality for all man. One of the reasons we were not allowed in the slave states like Missouri was that we were gaining political strength by virtue of growing population and gaining the ability to vote out slavery. this is back in the mid 1800's when all of the other Christian churches were ok with slavery.

There is also a HUGE difference between protesting a movement and protesting how it is carried out.

They actually didn't oppose it. I grew up in the 1960's and was a Mormon. I am not a Mormon now. We were living in small towns in the Northwest. The world never touched us much in those days. We all thought alike and the people were almost 100% white. Most of us couldn't tell you the definition of civil rights.

    Because change is a sin

Did they? Do you have a reference?

Joseph Smith championed the rights of blacks back when blacks didn't have any rights.

Because the con man, Joseph Smith, was a racist.

They didn't like those Black guys too much - just sort of like our racist republican party of today doesn't like those Black guys too much.
