French: Imparfait or Passe Compose?

Can someone please tell me whether this is imperfect or passe compose? It's part of a story and it says something like: one day we went to the park (passe compose). Now here's the one I need help with:

My brother played ball while I finished my book. Which tense is played, and which tense is finished? Passe compose or imperfect?

    I would prefer :

    Mon frère a joué (passé composé) au ballon, pendant que je terminais (imparfait) de lire mon livre.

    But it is not incorrect to say :

    Mon frère jouait (imparfait) au ballon, pendant que je terminais (imparfait) de lire mon livre.

    You can say : pendant que je finissais mon livre, that would be an imparfait, too.

    Often, the part introduced by "pendant" will be put in the first position:

    Pendant que je finissais (imparfait) mon livre, mon frère a joué (passé composé) au ballon.
