Why does guns, used for long range shooting, have long barrels compared to the ones used for shorter range..

Longer barrels allow for longer distance between the sights, and more rifling, which makes them more accurate at long range. And of course they generally put more powder behind the rounds on these guns as well.

A bullet is stabilized in the air by spinning. It is spun by grooves in the barrel called rifling. A longer barrel will have longer grooves, giving the bullet a more consistent spin and vector on leaving the muzzle.
Also, the bullet is propelled by hot gasses from the burning powder expanding. In a longer barrel, the gas has more time to expand and more time to apply force to the bullet. In a short barrel, the bullet may leave before the gasses are completely expanded and they will then expand into open air, which doesn't help velocity.
So a longer barrel is better for long range shooting because it will create more velocity and a more stabilized spin and therefore flight pattern than a shorter barrel. This makes it much more accurate.
