As I, a good L.D.S. sit here drinking a Diet Coke with caffeine, I guess I'd better put up some kind of answer! The Word of Wisdom, Section 89 of our Doctrine and Covenants from which we get such health advice as avoiding tobacco, alcohol and hot drinks, (interpreted to mean tea and coffee), is usually mistaken as a health guide. It is that, and will promote better health if observed. (In terms of health stats, we L.D.S. have better health than any other segment of the U.S. population, except Seventh Day Adventists, who avoid meat.) But, more importantly, the Word of Wisdom is god asking us to keep a minimal standard of sacrifice as an "entry" level requirement for a church that will ask much, much more of us in terms of time, commitment, service and such like. If we can keep the basics of the Word of Wisdom, then it's a sign we'll be able to take on more responsibilities. It's not so much that drinking coffee or tea will kill you; it's not that caffeine is that bad for you. It's whether you can make these commitments to God in preparation for greater sacrifices to come.

Coffee and green and black tea are substances, along with tobacco and alcoholic drinks that we are commanded to abstain from in the Word of Wisdom a guide to healthful living. The Word of Wisdom isn't meant to be a comprehensive list of what to eat and what not to eat, but it does teach about balance and using common sense in our dietary choices. Some things are so bad for us that we have been told to abstain from them altogether. Notice that the things we are told to abstain from are all highly addictive.

When the Word of Wisdom was given in the early 1830's soda pop wasn't readily available it's confusing to some people that caffeinated sodas aren't included on that list, but Heavenly Father gave us brains and He has given us enough information that we should be able to use our common sense in choosing what to put into them without having to be told that something isn't the best thing to put into. And also, someone else pointed out that in order to be temple worthy we abstain from coffee, tea, alcohol and tobacco. Abstaining from caffeinated soda isn't one of the requirements to many people feel it's okay. Others don't. This is an area where we need to choose for ourselves.

In order to qualify for a temple recommend a member of the Church has to abide by the "Word of Wisdom"...it is found in Doctrine and Covenants section 89. The interpretation of the drinks to avoid (by prophets) is to avoid tea and coffee. ...Soda was not specifically mentioned and so it is not a violation of the Word of Wisdom.

Obviously some members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints avoid soda also, because it isn't good for a person.

Because Mormons make sugar beets that were/are processed for their sugar and used in sodas. A boycott was placed on sugar beet crops which Mormons had by soda manufacturers a long time ago because the Mormon church wouldn't allow their members to drink soda. In order to sell their crops and not go broke the church changed their teachings to allow soda to be consumed by their members, thus lifting the boycott.

And yes, it is only the caffeinated sodas that they weren't supposed to consume, but back then those were the ones which made up the majority of the market.

Supposedly a Mormon prophet was told by God to not drink tea or coffee, but never said anything about soda.

Source(s): I was told that coffee is like smoking, and it leaves a bunch of tar in your chest... I used to be a Mormon.

They're not supposed to drink soda either. Most of them drink it anyway, but I remember there were a few that used to stay away from it completely.

I believe it is caffeine they avoid, but perhaps also coffee and tea, for they were prohibited before the decaffeinated version came out
