Volkswagen A.C. Carb not getting gas. Now what?

If I put a straw full of gas in my carburetor throat it and will start and run very well for 5 seconds or so. After that runs out it dies. It will not start by the usual method. It is getting gas to the tank bowl but it isn't going into the carburetor by itself. What do I do to fix this?

Open the needle valve on the carb a few turns. Do the straw full of gas trick and while its running slam the choke all the way closed. This will serve to suck some fuel from the fuel bowl through that idle port in the carb(dislodging any dirt). Then reset that needle valve screw and try starting it a gain. If that fails remove the carb and open it up and clean it out and reassemble with a rebuild kit.
