Why would Newt Gingrit want the USA to build a Military Base on the Moon?

Gingrit has said publicly he will build a base in the moon if he gets elected. When Gingit says base it can only mean a military base with all the weopens(including Nuclear) and systems.

He also said that when enough people immigrated to the moon and its population reached 13,000 they could petition for statehood.  Thereby implying it would be civilian in nature, not military.

The man is clearly in need of heavy medication.

You should be able to spell Gingrich prior to writing about him. And this really isn't a military question. That is especially true when you consider that the Space Program is led by NASA which is a civilian organization. Base does not equal Military. 1st, 2nd and 3d base are some fairly good examples of how Base does not equal Military.
