Jehovah's Witnesses: Doesn't our God have just an absolutely awesome name?

Do you just read the name as a label or do you keep the meaning of his name in mind when you read passages containing it? Here are some examples of what I mean:

“Therefore say to the sons of Israel, ‘I am [He That Causes To Be], and I shall certainly bring YOU out from under the burdens of the Egyptians and deliver YOU from their slavery, and I shall indeed reclaim YOU with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 And I shall certainly take YOU to me as a people, and I shall indeed prove to be God to YOU; and YOU will certainly know that I am [He That Causes To Be,] YOUR God who is bringing YOU out from under the burdens of Egypt. 8 And I shall certainly bring YOU into the land that I raised my hand in oath to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; and I shall indeed give it to YOU as something to possess. I am [He That Causes To Be].’” (Exodus 6:6-8)

"And the Egyptians will certainly know that I am [He That Causes To Be] when I stretch out my hand against Egypt, and I shall indeed bring the sons of Israel out from their midst.”" (Exodus 7:5)

"“. . . By this you will know that I am [He That Causes To Be]. Here I am striking with the rod that is in my hand upon the water that is in the Nile River, and it will certainly turn into blood." (Exodus 7:17)

". . . in order that you may know that I am [He That Causes To Be] in the midst of the earth." (Exodus 8:22)

"And they will have to know that I am [He That Causes To Be]; not in vain did I speak about doing to them this calamitous thing.”’" (Ezekiel 6:10)

"And I shall certainly magnify myself and sanctify myself and make myself known before the eyes of many nations; and they will have to know that I am [He That Causes To Be].’" (Ezekiel 38:23)

Do you see how much power and meaning the above verses take on when you read them with the meaning of the name in mind? What an awesome name!

Jehovah (which is the excepted pronunciation of His name determined by historians for centuries) is a magnificent name. To have the privilege of carrying that name is beyond words. It sets true worshipers apart from others.

@Rusty- Jehovah's name appears in abbreviated form several times in Revelation 19:1,3,4&6. Notice the King James says "Alleluia". Other translations render this as "Hallelujah". Both mean praise Jah, the shortened form of Jehovah.

The call there recorded as spoken by spirit sons of God to “Praise Jah, you people!” (NW) makes clear that the divine name was not obsolete; it was as vital and pertinent as it had been in the pre-Christian period.

This will help you understand how it has been mistranslated in the Greek scriptures and restored today.

Note the following acknowledgment by R. B. Girdlestone, late principal of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. The statement was made before manuscript evidence came to light showing that the Greek Septuagint originally contained the name Jehovah. He said: “If that [Septuagint] version had retained the word [Jehovah], or had even used one Greek word for Jehovah and another for Adonai, such usage would doubtless have been retained in the discourses and arguments of the N. T. Thus our Lord, in quoting the 110th Psalm, instead of saying, ‘The Lord said unto my Lord,’ might have said, ‘Jehovah said unto Adoni.’”

Proceeding on this same basis (which evidence now shows to have been actual fact) he adds: “Supposing a Christian scholar were engaged in translating the Greek Testament into Hebrew, he would have to consider, each time the word Κύριος occurred, whether there was anything in the context to indicate its true Hebrew representative; and this is the difficulty which would arise in translating the N. T. into all languages if the title Jehovah had been allowed to stand in the [Septuagint translation of the] O. T. The Hebrew Scriptures would be a guide in many passages: thus, wherever the expression ‘the angel of the Lord’ occurs, we know that the word Lord represents Jehovah; a similar conclusion as to the expression ‘the word of the Lord’ would be arrived at, if the precedent set by the O. T. were followed; so also in the case of the title ‘the Lord of Hosts.’ Wherever, on the contrary, the expression ‘My Lord’ or ‘Our Lord’ occurs, we should know that the word Jehovah would be inadmissible, and Adonai or Adoni would have to be used.” (Synonyms of the Old Testament, 1897, p. 43) It is on such a basis that translations of the Greek Scriptures (mentioned earlier) containing the name Jehovah have proceeded.

Rusty's comment- "(Mat 6:9 ) "Our FATHER which art in heaven, HALLOWED be thy NAME"

    Q. What name is Hallowed ? A. Father not Jehovah"

What?? Have you looked up the definition of hallowed? It means to revere, set apart as important. How is the word "Father" showing someone important? It doesn't. Your logic fails. Jesus had the Old Testament with Jehovah's name in it . He would have used it in speaking. He was with Him in his pre-human life. The big DEAL, asyou said, is that Jehovah's name was known and was used by the people in the New Testament. The church chose to remove Jehovah and replace it with Lord or Father. Historians have proven that Jehovah's name was in the Greek as the above statement proves.

    Q. What name did "God Almighty" appear to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as ? (Exod 6:3 )

    A. "I am the Lord" ( Gen 15:7 )

Why does the NWT insert the name "Jehovah" in (Gen 15:7 ) when that name was NOT known to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob ? (Exod 6:3 )

In (Exod 3:14 -15 ) God said to Moses "I AM THAT I AM..say unto the children of ISRAEL, I AM.."

    Q. Who is also called "I AM" in the bible ? A. JESUS ! "Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58 )

Not once in the N.T is God ever called Jehovah despite what the dishonest NWT may say. For any christian to address or pray to God in the name of "Jehovah" is unscriptural and blasphemous.

It is no different to calling God by the name Bill or Bob !

God the Father has placed the name JESUS above EVERY name in this world and the next ( Eph 1:21-22 and Phil 2:9-10 ) including the name Jehovah.

Shame on the NWT and the watchtower society for changing those verses to agree with their doctrine by adding the word "other" when no Greek text says this.

    Q.Whose name must we be saved by ? A.( ACTS 4:12, 16:31, and Rom 10:9-10 )

EDIT Hong Kong Phooey - What is the big DEAL with Halleleluiah, Jah, and Alleluia meaning Jehovah ?

Jesus and the apostles NEVER called God the Father by that name -- they called him God or Father !

(Mat 6:9 ) "Our FATHER which art in heaven, HALLOWED be thy NAME"

    Q. What name is Hallowed ? A. Father not Jehovah

(Rom 8:15 )"..but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, ABBA Father"

    Q. What name do we call God by the Spirit ? A. Abba Father not Jehovah

It's a beautiful and fitting name, Jehovah certainly lives up to that name and I think of that

whenever I stare at the starry skies at night, and the vastness of the Pacific Ocean,

the beautiful rolling hills, the kittens and dogs and birds... The love positivity unity and hard work you find within his people in these days of "no natural affection and comes to no agreement"

    Yes, yes he does.

Yes Jehovah is the only true God-- He that causes to be by his power going through Jesus-acts 2:22. There is no trinity god, its a false teaching created by catholocism and they altered their versions of Gods word-- it is misleading billions to break Gods #1 commandment on a daily basis--- Find Jehovah.

Yes, it certainly is an awesome name.

When Moses asked God at Ex. 3:13, “Suppose I am now come to the sons of Israel and I do say to them, ‘The God of YOUR forefathers has sent me to YOU,’ and they do say to me, ‘What is his name?’ What shall I say to them?”, God’s reply in Hebrew was: ´Eh·yeh´ ´Asher´ ´Eh·yeh´. Some translations render this as “I AM THAT I AM.” However, it is to be noted that the Hebrew verb ha·yah´, from which the word ´Eh·yeh´ is drawn, does not mean simply “be.” Rather, it means “become,” or “prove to be.” The reference here is not to God’s self-existence but to what he has in mind to become toward others. Therefore, the New World Translation properly renders the above Hebrew expression as “I SHALL PROVE TO BE WHAT I SHALL PROVE TO BE.” Jehovah thereafter added: “This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, ‘I SHALL PROVE TO BE has sent me to you.’” (Ex 3:14, ftn.)

That this meant no change in God’s name, but only an additional insight into God’s personality, is seen from his further words: “This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, ‘Jehovah the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name to time indefinite, and this is the memorial of me to generation after generation.” (Ex 3:15; compare Ps 135:13; Ho 12:5.) The name Jehovah comes from the Hebrew verb ha·wah´, “become,” and actually means “He Causes to Become.” This reveals Jehovah as the One who, with progressive action, causes himself to become the Fulfiller of promises. Thus he always brings his purposes to realization. Only the true God could rightly and authentically bear such a name.

This aids one in understanding the sense of Jehovah’s later statement to Moses: “I am Jehovah. And I used to appear to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as God Almighty, but as respects my name Jehovah I did not make myself known to them.” (Ex 6:2, 3) Since the name Jehovah was used many times by those patriarchal ancestors of Moses, it is evident that God meant that he manifested himself to them in the capacity of Jehovah only in a limited way. To illustrate this, those who had known the man Abram could hardly be said to have really known him as Abraham (meaning “Father of a Crowd (Multitude)”) while he had but one son, Ishmael. When Isaac and other sons were born and began producing offspring, the name Abraham took on greater meaning or import. So, too, the name Jehovah would now take on expanded meaning for the Israelites.

To “know,” therefore, does not necessarily mean merely to be acquainted with or cognizant of something or someone. The foolish Nabal knew David’s name but still asked, “Who is David?” in the sense of asking, “What does he amount to?” (1Sa 25:9-11; compare 2Sa 8:13.) So, too, Pharaoh had said to Moses: “Who is Jehovah, so that I should obey his voice to send Israel away? I do not know Jehovah at all and, what is more, I am not going to send Israel away.” (Ex 5:1, 2) By that, Pharaoh evidently meant that he did not know Jehovah as the true God or as having any authority over Egypt’s king and his affairs, nor as having any might to enforce His will as announced by Moses and Aaron. But now Pharaoh and all Egypt, along with the Israelites, would come to know the real meaning of that name, the person it represented. As Jehovah showed Moses, this would result from God’s carrying out His purpose toward Israel, liberating them, giving them the Promised Land, and thereby fulfilling His covenant with their forefathers. In this way, as God said, “You will certainly know that I am Jehovah your God.” (Ex 6:4-8)
