Mildly confused. Assistance please?

Be honest with him. Tell him excatly how you feel about it all and let him know that he has a great personality and that you want to see the real him when you two are together. Let him explain himself and just be open about it all. Honesty is always the best way to a great relationship

It seems you have a communication problem with him and it's not only from his side. Since you're posting this here, you need help as well since you have a problem too communicating to him and understanding him.

Working out the communication problems with him would be the best thing but still depends on how things go between you too. If you are going to discuss about this communication problem with him make sure (you need to be 100% sure) he doesn't lie. If he does tell him to stop doing that (in a nice manner) if you feel he still lies or gives evasive answers make him think you're his best friend as well. You need him to trust you... usually this needs to work both ways.

So, long story short: communication<-->trust

make him feel like you like him, care about him, and you dont care what anyone else thinks, just make him feel like hes welcomed and sometimes try and let him start the conversation, if someones laughing then your doing good, but for starts, i think you should just, change the subject off video games and books to something like? I dont know? if your in school then maybe something that happened? Or news? But if you dont feel like it and you just want him to talk then ask him about the last book he read to start off with? Don't be mad, most couples do go through this, maybe he feels like he doesn't deserve you?

Just compliment him and stuff, whatever you do to make him say that on your phones, do the same thing in person

Have you kissed and made out yet? I think you need to get this out of the way so he can relax and not be so self conscious.

Just give it time he'll start relaxing soon enough. Just try to make him laugh or something, and just take it slow.

Be goofy. Don't be afraid to be yourself around him. Then he may open up too
