Why is it that dogs start howling whenever they hear an ambulance, or police car?

Is there any explanation?

    it hurts their ears i heard. they have sensitive hearing.

    I have two dogs and neither of them bark or howl at ambulances or police cars and never have.

    It is probably the tone.

    Same reason that dogs bark at pianos when you hit the right key. :)
