what is your opinion of alimony?

So, recently I was talking to a coworker and he told me about how his ex-wife was trying to sue him for alimony.  They have been long divorced for 15 years, they have a son together that is now over the age of 18.  She never once pressed for alimony until now, and she is trying to get alimony for the pay he makes now because it is much more than what it was when they were together.

I thought about it and I came up with this conclusion:  alimony should be for only a year (get a job you lazy bum); amount paid out should only be enough to balance out the difference of the income of both parties; if there is a child involved, amount paid in child support should be deducted from amount paid in alimony; child support will stand independent of alimony and must be determined prior to alimony; and alimony is only for the amount made during time of marriage.

I think alimony was developed in the old days when women stayed home and the husband was the bread winner.  (I envision Mrs. Cleaver in her dress who didn't leave home) Women are now more in the work force than men I read recently so women don't stay home.  Most people need two incomes to make it now.  Having said that, when they divorce the woman should stand alone on her feet but get child support on the child IF she gets the child.  More men are getting the kid now compared to back in the 50's and 60's.  But the alimony should not happen in my opinion.  I look at that as something to simply "gig" the ex husband and not work.  The woman should work just like the man does.  No>> alimony should be gone!  When people divorce they put their claws out and go after the other person.  Alimony only helps fuel that.  Notice how rare it is the woman pays alimony?   This double standard needs to stop!!

I think alimony is a joke. If I chose to stay home, why should my hardworking husband pay for me to sit in my butt, after we divorce. Or if you marry a rich guy and then divorce why should he put out, just cause he has it. If my husband and I ever did separate, I would nit want anything of his. I would feel like a worthless who*e if I leave and cash his checks, then expect child support. Be glad if child support us being paid and get a job!

His ex-wife is talking out of her butt.   She can't win an alimony case at this point.   Alimony is not awarded as much as you think it is.

laws have changed but sleazy lawyers havent. My X tried that and found out the judges now dont allow it. Im disabled because of a accident and she cant recieve any support because of her adultry and judge refused to condone her lesbianisim. She has to pay ME child support..
