Can a bowling ball act as a good substitute for a wooden tai' chi ball?

I cannot afford the wooden ball. I am currently using a 12 lb bowling for tai chi ball exercises.

That should be fine, so long as the weight doesn't tense your arms too much.

Technically, all it teaches is for a person's arm joints to flow without resistance and to never go too high or too far from the center line, able to defend against kicks or hand strikes as needed. That's what the ball mostly instructs.

The legs are used to defend against anything really low. And evasion is used to defend against anything that comes close but doesn't get anywhere near the center line.
