need help on friendship !!?

Hi all, recently i just started my college and there is a foreign student from Iran.

He looks really nice but at the same time shy.

He knows how to speak English but his slang is different from people in our country, hence the way I speak he can't seem to understand.

I wish to be friends with him and i decided to learn his language Persian(just the speaking part to make our conversation easier).

Would he think i'm weird?

Having been in a similar position, I can say with confidence he won't think it's weird. He will appreciate it.

I'm Caucasian, and many years ago I met my boyfriends grandmother for the first time (he's Persian, and she's "old school Persian"). I pulled out all stops because I knew she didn't like me before she had even met me. I learned some basic Farsi, which is laughable at best. The way to her heart as well as the rest of his family, was through their stomachs. I learned how to cook as many Persian dishes as I could, prepare tea properly for his grandmother, and even host a Nowruz (The Zarathushtrian New Year/Persian New Year) party with all of the appropriate items laid out.

I earned a lot of respect when I put so much effort into learning those things. Especially with Ghormeh Sabzi and Tahcheen, I won the whole family over with those dishes!

Having that said, I don't know if you're male or female. If you're female and crushing on him, I highly suggest you take every warning you're given about Persian mothers. After 12 years, I finally ended the relationship because I couldn't tolerate his mom always being in my business, literally bringing single Persian women to holiday parties *I* hosted to fix him up with. I've met some great Persian women, but I'm pretty sure all of the mothers (whether they're nice to you or not), would rather their sons be with Persian women. :)

Anyway, check out Amazon. I got most of my books there. Be warned if you plan to get Rosetta Stone, the one for Farsi is in Arabic script, NOT Roman. So you're basically forced to learn both and learning Arabic script isn't the easiest thing to do. Heck, most Persians I know can't even read it, lol. Maybe it's changed since then. If you'd like to learn about Nowruz, which is coming up in March, there's a wonderful book on Amazon. It's actually for kids, but it's really informative and comes with cookie cutters. It's the best one I found. It's called: Happy Nowruz: Cooking with Children to Celebrate the Persian New Year and it's by Najmieh Batmanglij. I highly recommend her cook books, too. They're very easy to read and understand.

If he is anything like the spanish speakers and the people who use ASL that I know I think he will appreciate your willingness to learn his language so you can talk.

I don't think hell think your weird. I think it's cool how your taking that extra step to communicate with someone, try teaching him your slang as well, I'm sure he will adapt (:
