At a minimum, the first step to becoming a Registered Nurse is to obtain an Associate of Science in Nursing degree, then it is imperative that you pass the NCLEX-RN examination. Because the field of nursing is changing, more hospitals, clinics and medical facilities are looking to hire RN's with at least a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
For an advanced practice nurse, such as a nurse practitioner, the minimum requirement today is a Master of Science in Nursing degree. That is rapidly being phased out, however, with guidelines pointing toward a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree needed to practice on the higher levels of nursing.
