Buying a car at the impound lot?

Would it be legal to purchase an "expired" car from the impound lot? Like, it's usually held for a month, and then you can't reclaim it. Would it be possible to buy the expired unclaimed cars? I think this would be a cheap solution to an expensive situation, but I don't know if it's legal or not.

If a vehicle is impounded and not claimed by the legal owner within a certain time period, then most states require that the vehicles must be sold at a public auction. It is perfectly legal for a person to buy such cars, but they are probably not in running or driveable condition, and you'll have to chase your own paperwork to obtain a valid title for the car.
