History buffs? why do you think you know anything?

I really hate that term. Why do idiots who watch history channel or participate in re-enactments or play dungeons and dragons feel like they can debate an actual historian about medieval history? Guess what I can bring down the thunder of years of actual research to your three books and dorksploring. I don't debate scientists on science because I understand they know it better than me. I don't debate physicists because I havent studied the nature of the physical universe. I don't care if you got an A in world history. I got a 3.7 for 6 years. Guess what? That means I know my field better than your wannabe jouster ****. Why do folk feel they know history better than historians when they have seen some outdated documentaries that used questionable sources and read a few Wikipedia articles. That is called trivia.

    a A- 60–69 or a GPA 3.5 - 3.9 is a pretty Low standard for 6 years in my chosen profession

i needed A+ 80–100 5.0 the pass mark was 95 Job EOD/IED Instructor and re-qualify every 6 months and I was Instructing for 15 years so My GPA must be 5 for 15 years

If i answer a Question about WW2 it is because I was Part or WW2 and after 38 years in Uniform and studying WW2 for over 70 years I think i Know a Bit about the Subject

and In Australia There is No History Military Fox or ABC or BBC to cloud my studies I must do it the Hard way and read about or Go to Germany to see the Locations for Myself

and after 70 odd Years I would never Be Rude enough Not to assume that someone else Might Know Something I don't

One thing i do Know about is the Battle of Britain from start to Finish Because I had the Honour to work with some of the Few for several years and some of the Aircraft

and in the winter in London spent a lot of time In Museums Like The Imperial War Museum

and as an instructor In the RAF and RAAF would Always expect someone to know more than me

and I am proud to be a Real WW2 History BUFF and if you find that offencive

Well I spent 4 years at University to get a History/Archeaology Degree and I am involved in Heritage teaching in England. I would never claim to be an expert as there is far too much to know. I come on to this forum to try to help out with genuine questions rather than complete someones term paper for them. I have never jousted (can't ride a horse), but I am fair with a sword, mace, axe, sling, crossbow and longbow. Where do I fit in?

You gotta remember, historians have learned from books and trivia as well. None of them were alive back then, how to u think they know anything about the past? Are they just guessing or making things up? No, they study and learn from books. Also, 6 years of school with a 3.7 isn't that impressive, unless u are in Jr. High

You got a 3.7 for six years. Ask yourself this, what does that mean? Does that mean you know everything there is to know on the subject or does it mean you gave a professor what they wanted of you to give you that GPA? Many history buffs have been studying their particular field for more than six years without getting any kind of GPA in it. Does that automatically mean their going to know less than you? No it doesn't. Nor does it necessarily mean they will know more than you. They may be just as qualified as you are.

History buffs are an essential part of the historical community because of their enthusiasm, and instead of scorning them excessively, those of us with graduate educations (I have a Ph.D. from WVU) should be working with them to improve our general understanding. Trivia and facts can be very useful when they are part of a framework of organized historical learning. Only the buffs (and profs) who mislead the public with ill-founded information should be ostracized -- it is all about a multiplicity of viewpoints, after all!

Judging by your writing ability, and your debate style, I think your GPA was very, very generous.

And, given your anger, I am guessing that a trivia buff just beat you out of something you really, really wanted.

As for your "education," I think you have demonstrated its worth to all of us here.

That and $4 will get you a Venti at Starbucks.
