How to go about writing a letter of complaint?

I want to write a letter to my former employers about the horrendous way I was treated. How do I go about writing the letter and making it effective?

Thanks :)

Update:

To Ed Fox. I already have a great job, thank you, and I'm not an example of the youth that you refer to. I want to write to my FORMER employer about the unfair way I was treated and by law they cannot give a bad reference to any of my other future employers. At this present time I do not even use them as a reference as I know they won't give me one anyway. Plus, I am not a young person who can't grasp authority. The authority in this particular work place made my life hell, not through asking me to do my job but ways that I can't even express my hatred for them for what I suffered.

So there, try to be less judgemental next time, thank you.

    Hi

    how about...

    Dear Sir/Madam

Ref: My employ within your company (Without Prejudice)

I have been employed by your company for x years and during that time there were occasions where I feel that I was mistreated/ or unfairly chastised for my Performance or manner. This I feel is unacceptable within the workplace.

    For example.......

I really enjoyed the work for I found it interesting and challenging but was blighted by the indiscriminate outbursts by certain members of colleagues and management.

I write this out of frustraton rather than anger.

    Hope this may help

Not a good move if you're ever thinking of working again. Your potential employer will obviously contact your previous employers. In my company, young people (18/19) have been known to walk out of their job simply because a legitimate supervisor gave them instructions. Why are today's young people so arrogant with no grasp of the fact that a workplace supervisor or manager is legitimately in authority over them?
