Taxi to Culebra or rent a car? (from San Juan)?
I have been researching for what seems like forever and every site I look at tells me something different. I am looking for real peoples' opinions here. Someone who has made the trip or lives in Puerto Rico, whatever. I am planning to travel to Culebra in July, me and one other person. I am looking for the cheapest way to travel to Culebra. We are flying into San Juan (cheapest flight from Orlando). I have read about flying and taking the Ferry. The ferry I know is just a few dollars but I'm concerned with the ride over to the ferry from San Juan. I have also read that the ferry can be difficult to make and there are long lines, etc. Thanks in advance for ANY advice :)
Can anybody give me a name of an airline/service I could use to fly from SJ to Culebra? I have not been able to find any useful information as far as contacting one. Also, I was unaware of a bus that makes that run. I think I am decided on the plane, as long as I can find an appropriate price. Thanks everyone!

So you can rent a car, but you can't take the car to Culebra so you've rented a car to leave in the public parking lot at the ferry doc, now if you are only going to be in Culebra for a day or two that would be a great option. IF you're staying a week then you are talking about paying for a car, and parking for it to just sit there. Not to mention traffic, if your traveling during peak times and if something happens to the car (break in, stolen, vandalized) while it sits in the parking lot you have opened up a whole new can of worms and a pain in the butt. And yes the ferry lines can be incredibly long during that time of the year, I once arrived a full 5 hours before the first ferry on a non holiday week on a Wed in July and didn't make the first or second one, and when it appeared I wouldn't make the third either I just went to Vieques instead.. And there were literally a 1,000 collage kids with hand trucks full of beer that had been waitning in line all night.
Taking a taxi, will cost more than $75 each way, but you still have the line issue and the spotty ferry service (they continually have issues with repairs and such).
Frankly I would fly, if you can swing it. I'm not kidding, in July you will not find parking, a spot on the ferry unless you arrive the night before to stand in line, and you will not be the only one doing this. They no longer take reservations for the ferry and it's on a first come first serve basis. July is the month all the collage kids flock to Culebra for a spring break-esk party time.
Not far from the ferry is a small commuter airport that will get you there for around $50 each way if the ferry has long lines or isn't working. But taking the flight from San Juan, although costs more will save you in the long run. This is coming from someone who KNOWS! Good Luck.

Taxi from San Juan to Culebra?
* The complete trip includes to cross the sea, so a taxi (car) from San Juan will not get you to Culebra. The taxi may get you to the ferry at Fajardo, and then you get on the passenger ferry to Culebra.
Rent a car?
* You may rent a car at San Juan, get to Fajardo and take the cargo ferry that can carry the car to Culebra.
However, what you have read about the ferry, long lines, long waiting time, schedule problems, is true.
Other option not involving the ferry?
* Take a small plane (Cessna) at San Juan to Culebra, more expensive than the ferry but more reliable in terms of time.
* Take a small plane (Cessna) to Culebra from Fajardo.

Ok, once you are in the airport you'll rent a car and you'll take the4 exit to Carolina, the road you'll hit is the Baldorioti De Castro expressway, or also call PR-26 and you'll drive all the way till the end. At the end the expressway splits in to, the lest exit is to take road PR-3 and the other one os to take you to the expressway 66 or PR-66, that's the one you'll take, expressway 66. At the end of that expressway there is a shopping mall called The Outlets Of Canovanas, in the light, you'll turn right and that will connect you with road #3, the same you left behind. Then you'll drive all the way to Fajardo. Once in Fajardo you'll take road PR-194 and then from there you'll take PR-195, that road will take you straight up to the ferry piers and once there just take the ferry to Culebra. This is the operating hours 9am, 3pm and 7pm daily. This is the phone number where you may get more info about the ferry hours 787-863-3360, 787-860-3580FX. The car rental place will provide you with a map.

Is threr some reason you can't just take the bus over to Fajardo from San Juan and then take the water taxi to the island?
