No one has a clear answer, but common sense tells us we need to stop spending what we don't have and make the most of what we do.
Problem is, most politicians don't follow common sense, but rather their own interests and muck up the country's finances even more while claiming they're "helping". The US Government not only needs a true financial planner with parental like power to reject wasteful spending (right now this is the president's role) but needs to reward those who work to keep the money in America.

Cut from the biggest pieces of the pie and raise taxes on those who can swing it.
Quibbling over how much money the Dept of Education spends is silly. That's a drop in the bucket. The big expenses are the social nets (SS, medicare) and national security. Cut from the biggest pieces and you'll make the biggest differences.
However, those are political suicide. So an increase in tax revenue is also necessary.

Stop spending money it doesn't have, and also, individuals not spending more than they have. Buying a million dollar house on $20000 a year is just stupid.

it's not as gloomy as it sounds. don't think i'm diminishing anything here, but if the government would quit hindering the economy, 15T would be chump change.
