The moon ring tonight?

Wondering if anyone else sees the enormous ring that's around the moon right now. With my neck craned I could hardly get the whole thing in my field of vision. Any thoughts on the cause? Any and all opinions please, no matter how illogical you think they are.

  • Ice crystals (or cirrus clouds -- same thing) produces a ring around the sun or moon about 45 degrees in diameter. You can read all about it by searching for Lunar Halo.

It is called a lunar halo. It happens all the time when there are clouds at nighttime.

That is an optics phenomena of ice crystals in the upper atmosphere scattering the moon light.
